A while ago, days on Disco frequently consisted of flying to good ol' Colorado in my CSV and mining silver. And then running back to Manhatten from angry Xenos
Untill I bought my lovely transport and decided I would begin hauling in bulk.
However it surprised me when I hit level 40 and bought my Freelancer ID to go on a run into Buffalo base and haul 800K in diamonds out only to be destroyed by an Outcast player. I was furious because not only was this in NY, but it was completely out of RP too- I was a Freelancer, minding my own business, almost freindly with outcasts. I asked him why he attacked me, only to respond saying that my tag said that I was Liberty Police. I had been aware of this since pre- level 40, but I thought that this tag would be replaced with 'Freelancers' when I bought my ID.
It obviously wasn't, so I asked around for answers to how I could replace it with 'Freelancers'. I tried to decrease my rep with the Police by aborting missions and taking bribes from enemys of them but somehow (despite my rep being higher with LSF, Navy and many others) I still show up as police. How can I change this? Could I find Freelancer missions or bribes and do them or do I have to do this some other way?
you need to cancel police missions, until youre rep with them becomes neutral. after this you will lose youre tag. there is no freelancer tag (if i know it correct). just dont make missions for noone, dont kill npc's, so you will never gain a tag. that is the closest to a freelancer. or just get a zoner tag, zoners are neutral with everyone.
there is a freelancer tag, but its very hard to get.
ned to bribe zoners,bh and abort bh mision to.
long and tough proces

I've heard that a freelancer rep is really hard to get... There is a thread about it somewhere. Use the search function, 'cos I can't be bothered to find it for you:P
Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll take a look for that FL rep thread especially. And Maiko the attacker claimed he scanned me and looked at my ID and and he said that it was a Police ID too (much contrary to the truth and my disbelief) and that scanning the ID was the first thing they did.
there is a freelancer tag - but since it is a generic ID, i guess your tag says a lot about your affiliation, too. - however, a destroyer blowing you up is a violation to the rules.... traders, cooperation traders, zoners and freelancers are under the proteciton of the serverrules from being blown up by warships.
so - all he could have done to you was to taunt / insult you ( in good old roleplay of course ) - but not shoot at you - no, not even a warning shot.
freelancers are down to their ingame reputation - even if they have a freelancer tag. the problem with such an ID is that its nither here nor there. a lawful doesn t know if the freelancer is on the unlawful side, while an unlawful doesn t know if the freelancer is lawful. - NPC freelancers are lawful - and are unwelcome in pirate territory. ( allthough thats the pirate players own fault. they turn freelancer NPCs red... NPC pirates don t mind them - but they ask them for cargo... that means, freelancers are white to pirate NPCs )
when its about the roleplay, - a pirate should not kos you. but a freelancer has to declare himself about why he should not be taxed / attacked. its upon the freelancer to explain himself, cause he is the one that has an uncertain ID. the pirate himself can approach a freelancer in a doubiously or hostile way.

Agreed. Possibly report him for attacking you, that was wrong. Hope you got screenies. And before you finish removing LPI tag, make sure you aren't full green with anyone else, it will switch tags to them immediately.
