first, the simplest of all:
what's the comp u have? what's the sound card? have you tampered with the settings in FL? have you tampered with ANY settings? was it working before?
If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and adore and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God? - from 'Nightfall' by I. Asimov The Outcasts consider Siniestre Nube a sacred place for several reasons. Early explorers discovered a jumphole within the depths of the cloud that leads to a strange world of ringed stars and strange craft. All ships in the burrial ground are placed facing that hole to honor the Alien Spirits. - An Outcast rumor
i have also had this problem it is because the newer sound cards do not like cruise engines but thrusters are fine for me.My laptop is brand new so thats the only reason i can come up with

That's further proof that on-board audio is atrocious in comparison to true soundcards
Princedwi pretty much said it.
Since I run FL on almost minimum requirements but with a monster of a GFX card for the machine and it is a Creative SoundBlaster sound card what gives me the sound. Even with 3D sound I don't have probs all the time (crashing on entering jupholes or something), I turned it off because it causes me lag sometimes.
I thought you may have other issues, as the "crackling" of sound is a symptom of low CPU power, try turning off some of the programs running in background (kill all of them) or if you run two instances of FL at same time, loose one. And... check for a virus that may be the problem too :(
