Wat?

Get a GTX 700 series.

I was going to get the GTX 760 but then someone pointed out the HD7850 and the fact that the speed is only slightly lower (as well as being almost half the price). Seeing as how I could just crossfire two of these things at any point in time, I'm not sure that getting a single 700 series is worth it.

Yes and no. The 7870 XT Tahiti Le Edition is like 20% better then the standard 7870. Note that I speak about the boosted version of 7870, 7850 is a way inferior compared to the Nvidia 760.
I also run one by Sapphire and it is great card.

CPU is going to drag your system down even with an i5. Im not saying you should get an i7 (you can go for the AMD equivalent FX-8---- or FX-9----) but if you want to stay ahead of the curve (instead of behind) I would recommend either. It would put you on even terms with the consoles

I'm tempted to get the i5 simply for it's single core performance. While I get that most games these days are multi-threaded, I have yet to come across such a game in my travels besides Star Citizen.

Also the i5 has an "Upgrade" Path while the FX-8xxx series doesn't. (The 9xxx series isn't out yet if I recall.)

EDIT: Updated Config

EDIT: Ignore

Another possibility are the K series chips, have you considered those?

I have but I don't plan to Overclock.

Also If I haven't replied to anyone here it's because I'm still considering/researching the advice.

EDIT: Switched once again, this time bumped the GPU to a 7950. It's not the 760, but it's close. Also it's still cheaper than the 760.

7870XT preforms 10% worse then the 760. It is nerfed 7950. The 7950 preforms 5% worse then 760.
However the ATI cards overclock better so you can get the 760 performance with 7870XT and you can beat it with overclocking 7950.

About the Overclocking you need to understand how the PC market works.
They make 1 new product each year, in order to boost sales they just make weaker versions of it, some with cut functionalities or cheaper/less ram in the case of the VGAs others with just reduced voltage and frequency or with locked functions in the case of the CPUs.
In your case Haswell is one single engineered chip made different in order to cover the market better.
So overclocking allows you to get more performance per dollar. It is funny how Intel charge you extra for it with the software made lock on all non K CPUs.
Also I am sure you can find some Windows 7 from a friend of yours or somewhere else instead of buying it- if you need help drop me PM.

Looked at your second build and I suggest going with the i5 CPU, a 3.4 ghz if you can get your hands on one.

Also the ATi video card you have has DDR5, which is very very nice stuff, I have an old ATi video card and it has DDR5 (1GB) and it still kicks butt on most games despite it's age.

Liquid cooling as someone else here has said, is really only needed if you plan on doing silly things like overclocking and my opinion is if you feel you NEED to overclock, then you bought the wrong CPU for your PC in the first place.

As for the rest of it, looks good, although I would buy a 500gb HDD (or a SSD if you can afford it) just for your OS.
Your OS goes on the 500GB HDD, everything else goes on the 1TB HDD, that way if your OS goes haywire you shouldn't lose any important info.

What people are saying about the case is totally up to you, but I've recently had a look at the BitFenix Merc Alpha case and it looks like a keeper to me.

No one else mentioned it yet so..

Noticed your chosen motherboard supports up to 32 gig of DDR3-2800 speed ram, but you are only getting DDR3-1600 speed. If you only really need a minimum of 8 gig I would suggest going with 1x 8 gig of some faster memory. That motherboard has 4 slots so you can always add up to three more sticks later, (to max it out) if need be.

Classic rule of thumb: A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. A computer is only as fast as it's slowest part. Smile

I know overclocking gets more performance per dollar but I have a tendency to fry things I try and improve :|

It appears I forgot to update the main post regarding build switching. That's done now.

EDIT: What? 500 gigs for a purly OS HD? Lolwat?

To my knowledge, the higher speeds of RAM aren't shown to have any significant effect on overall computer speed.
