even if it is in flood doesnt change the fact that the auto technerf went against the very reason most people play freelancer, to have the shiniest pew sticks possible.
people had to interact a hell of a lot to get the stuff they wanted. auto tech nerf totally massacred the quantity of role play, and slashed the player count in half
How about either bringing back the old techchart system with a bit more admin supervision over how stuff gets handled/with an eased version of SRPs for equipment combos, or make technology theft a legitimate and sufficient reason for an FR5 with the current system?
Oh, the technerf. Frankly, there is hardly anything left for me to add in terms of the ethics of this issue. But needless to say, I'm with Joe on this one. The current technerf is just a broad, lazy-man's solution, and the consequences are quite clear in the community. No need for me to say anything more.
BUT
Logically, there is -some- merit to this technerf, in terms of iRP technological compatibility. It DOES make sense for there to be some issues with attaching different components from different manufacturers. Just like how XBOX games can't be played on Playstation consoles, or Toyota parts for a Toyota Car, the architectural foundations for them can be different.
This thread's become so depressing. Sure needs some ponies.
The truth is that the old system was crap, a way too biased in order to work for everybody.
Also it is true that the current system is crap as well.
I always wonder why none of the devs ever gone in middle way of doing things or using the so called "trade-offs". Combine both worlds.
Lets say you give the official factions a limited choice of slots. Lets say that each slot is worth one green cell or 5 faction specified SRP IDs that could be used in RolePlay with other factions( read skypefriends with benefits ). Bring back all guard IDs and use them as faction IDs with separate faction controlled via slots nerf.
Such stuff can work because you give back a lot of power to the factions while increasing their hours on-line instead of removing them like you did.
The truth is that you can make the people to stay in-game only by certain things and the simplest thing is to give them faction/group of friends to play together that can actually influence the in-game situation under certain trade-offs.

Old system was crap but was sure better then the technerf. It was shady idea from the start (though some were excited to have a possibility to finnaly get those Katanas BD wasn't giving to anyone) and I'm wholeheartly with this rant to remove it and return the biased, freaked old system that was still better a whole lot of heads up.
But okay, okay. I know the devs don't like to trash out the written code (like with the POBs even if POBs are kinda stupid, too abuse-able and useless generally). Still the code can be used, or it's parts more likely, to add some control over the old system. Just make the technerf to automatically nerf to 10% core all ships that are not approved in the list. I guess it's somehow possible to deal with. We have a lists the faction do, we have the allowed equipment listed. So I guess it can be played out so once the name, for example Joe.The.Freelancer, gets in the list then to his ID allowed tech is getting added the tech listed so he gets 100% with it. We had also a rule about permanently allowed tech (if the faction was giving the tech it could not be taken away then) so it can be played as giving 75% core nerf once faction breaks with the individual and removes the allowance so he still can have what he got but with 75% nerf.
Since this thread's been getting some pretty constructive input, I'm gonna move it out to general discussion to make sure a wild spiderman riding a pink pony won't charge into this thread all of a sudden.
Doesn't mean this might actually happen, but it's an interesting discussion nonetheless.
Thanks to everyone who posted their take on the matter. Didn't really expect this thread to come this far.

Should I have known that the technerf system was being implemented, I would have granted Katanas to everybody and the dog who asked me over Skype as ]bd[ leader, so then people had an actual reason to complain lol
