Remember what Korrd used to say... if you use missiles you still have to aim! They aren't there for lazy pilots, they're there to be used by those that can be bothered learning them right.
Personally, I don't bother. Relying on ammo makes me feel too nervous.
Let me rephrase that: for those of us who aren't proficient at aiming guns, and have no hope of improvement. No, I can't aim guns, and I can use missiles to a degree, but against anything but Vanilla hardware they leave you at a bit of a disadvnatage...if they actually HIT something besides a friendly NPC one out of every three shots or so that'd be nice.

But that's not fair on everyone that has earned their stripes properly, really, isn't it?
I mean, I'd be annoyed if some skill-less, ahem, 'noob' blew me up, just because he was mounting missiles.
A touch unfair, really.
Anyway, try practise with missiles, they're actually good if you know how to use them. Ask Mjolnir or Spear. I can't promise they'll help, but I know that they are able at least!:P

So you're labelling missiles as a dishonorable weapon? I don't want an Uber Pwnzor weapon like they are when running Vanilla on a supercomputer versus a flock of Titans, I just want something that hits the enemy a decent amount of time. Indeed, I have never gotten a gun kill in a fighter, so I know missiles work at least reasonably well, but I have only seen FOUR people make decent kills with them, namely Exile, Spear, Mjolnir and Korrd. If there are others out there, come blow me up some time and I'll add you to the list. Until then, for those of us who aren't natural-born figther gods, give us a hand? Please? Missiles are expensive, I don't like paying for something that doesn't work.

Missiles are useless, especially those that are suppose to be homing missiles.
I sat behind a slow moving gunboat and fired 70 class 7 shieldbusters that have the same turning, refire etc stats as the homing missiles like the firestalker and NONE hit the damn gunboat at all.
I had the crosshairs lined up fine (can aim fine thks) and the gunboat wasn't even thrusting, hell he was barely maintaining steerage way.
Missiles use to be hit or miss, but at least the homing missiles did actually home in for a few seconds.
Needless to say I sold the missile launchers the next time I docked and the only missile launcher I've used since then was the dragonfly gunboat one, and that would only hit things that flew into the missile.
Now none of my characters have missiles, not worth wasting a valuable gun/turret slot for something that uses energy/ammo and doesn't help kill things.
The thing is... they do work and are balanced... they just require a similar amount of aiming skill as guns do, really. It's just a different type of skill. They shouldn't be a crutch for weak pilots, more like an alternative to guns, a more exotic weapon for flashy pilots.
People do make missiles work. Learn from them.
Another option of course, that you could use, is my favourite weapon...
... The Nuclear Mine.
I know you love nukes, Eppy. That weapon is ridiculously good if used correctly. In fact, I think my past dozen kills or more in my fighters have been via nuke mine.
Missiles are priceless against Vanilla ships. Priceless!!
I agree, they are pretty much useless against non-vanilla, but still.. 5 hits and his guns are ripped..
I can only give you one tip. Don't spam them, even if you think he's in the right spot in each pass.
Use them once in a while to surprise your enemy, and your hitting percentage will rise.
You'll see.;)
And yes, agreed with blunt on nukes.
I'm just still amazed not too many people use them properly, as well as with CD's.

Missiles use to be great weapons that evened out the gap between brilliant pilots and good ones, now you need to be a piloting god to use them. Which doesn't help those who aren't gods and only used them to get the occasional decent hit in.
Mines are there to discourage people from chasing me or to put them off guard.
At least thats how I use em, works well so far, especailly if you've got a rear-firing turret.
Best and most reliable way to get rid of a lone NPC that won't let you cruise is to drop his shield and keep it off with a shieldbusting turret and then drop a mine, he flys into it 'boom' no more CDs spammed at you.
To be fair, missiles are great against some non-vanilla ships too, such as the Raven's Talon and the Crow, since the guns are all packed together. They have their advantages.
Mines are also used offensively, combined with well timed CDs for the perfect trap. Just ask TBH.:P
Well, that's exactly what I said. You can't use Nuke's full potential with no CD's.
It's my favorite weapon, mix of those two:)
