I'm tall so "spread out the fat" fairly well since I do eat and drink more than is needed. You can see me both being kind of thin and eating way too much here.
I was a little overweight as a kid but not so much later in high school, but put on a bit of weight again in first year of uni. Too much booze, cheese and bacon would probably be the reason for that.
A while after I moved out of halls and into a flat (and especially towards the end of the academic year) I decided not to buy fresh meat because it was expensive - a tin of chickpeas, beans or lentils costing about 50p instead of a pack of chicken for about £3 to do the same number of meals can be significant over a few months - which was pretty slimming despite drinking just as much. Buy/learn to make a decent sauce and you'll not notice what is in it.
I was feeling kind of down at the start of this year (my third at uni) until the end of the summer so wasn't doing an awful lot of getting out my chair, but also didn't eat an awful lot (especially over the summer, when I essentially lived off of ham, yoghurts, bread and crisps... and that giant burger) so they balanced each other out.
My advice would be to talk to your mum to help out with the cooking a couple of times a week while you are at home rather than trying it when you've moved out and it is so easy to be lazy. Don't know if you paid attention in Home Economics (if you did it, and whatever it is called in your silly education system) but that should give you at least a basic grasp of things.
Even just actively walking about is better than sitting at your computer all day, other exercise is up to you.
As stated by others, portion sizes, eating only at meals, cooking healthier things in healthier ways are all good tips.
Also Tibbles is probably more right about the water thing than I realise, I drank upwards of five litres a day back when I had a sink in my room in halls and still have more than two these days.

This is also relevant. Take note.
Also from the above photo, they like big stacks of meat

As someone who has fought "The Battle of the Bulge" his entire life, I guess I diet constantly, especially since I went back in the military over a year ago and actually started caring about myself again.
Simply put, I exercise a lot, running at least twice, preferably 3 days a week and hitting the gym where I can. On days I don't run, I walk.....and not just a casual stroll either! Cardio burns fat. Workouts build mass. I have to watch how I balance those.
As for food, I eat almost no sugar, no pasta, light wheat breads and lots of fruits and veggies. I also don't drink enough to say that I do, having an occasional beer with a friend is about as much as I drink. Watch your salts as well. It's tough but it can be done.
I fought the belly, too
My solution was low carb dieting (not no carb, not atkins) - within a year i went down 40 kg(110 -> 70).....then i got stressed out by work...and kinda lost my good habits again, over 3 years i gained some of those kilos back but the eight stays at a much lower value also, as already mentioned here: drink 3+ l of water a day, keep the ooze low, eat 3 times a day and do it regularly...
Also, don't do cardio or endurance crap for weight loss, build up some muscle instead! Jogging around can only burn so few calorie in comparison to gaining a few kilos of muscle...
And if it is for picking up girls instead of your health: as long as you are not...ridiculous, murrica fat ....well a big ego and self confidence should suffice all day every day
Well, I'm 6'2", and weigh in at 260 - which is 10 more pounds than what I weighed when I graduated college. Unfortunately, a lot of the rules don't apply to me - I could eat 5 strips of bacon and 3 eggs fried in the leftover bacon grease every morning and not gain weight. (Come to think of it, that is what I tend to do, but I digress...)
If you really want to look great before you start college - delay your entry into college for a year. Enlist in the National Guard, and go off to basic training.
I guarantee you that at the end of that 10 week period (U.S. Army) you'll be in better physical shape than you've ever been in your life. I WAS a bit tubby and out of shape when I went to basic training - 5'11", 38" chest, 38" waist, and weighed in at 200 lbs. (Side note - I was 19 at that point.)
Came back home from basic, I was 6'2", had a 44" chest, 34" waist, and weighed 160 pounds. Oh, and I could walk 30 miles a day with a 50 pound pack on my back, carrying an 8 pound M-16A1 in my arms. And oh, yeah, that was in the days before Kevlar, so we humped with steel pots.
Yeah, military basic training will put hair on your chest, and make your balls drop is they haven't done so already...
(Side note - today was my third 13 hour day in a row, so I'm relaxing at home with a 14 ounce plastic cup that HAD 3 ounces of Seagrams Honey, 3 ounces of Long Island Iced tea, and the rest Coke. So I may be a little bit toasted by now, since the cup is half empty. It's sure not half full anymore .... )

I'm skinny... I've wanted to be fat all my life... and it's not like I'm poor or anything - I have a unhealthy diet - I just can't seem to put on weight
No atmosphere? GTFO.
