I have been wondering about this persistent Discovery issue, and I'd like to illustrate by telling a small story from today:

I'm going to conn on a transport to help transfer an ID to some guy - it's only me and him there - and a fighter undocks and complains no other fighters are present for training. I tell him I will log a fighter for him, and we pew and have fun. Nice person with a positive attitude. A few minutes later I jump on my dread (no one knows that I am the same player) that I just bought new guns for and want to set up in peace in Conneticut. The very instant I undock the same player I just had pews and pleasant convo with for 10-20 minutes calls me a "jerk". Yes, a jerk for doing nothing else but undocking a capital ship in Conneticut. And this isn't a standalone thing, it happens quite frequently when people log a cap in conn, and even on the roleplay part of the server capital ship captains are often treated with disdain and prejudice for doing nothing but piloting a ship they happen to like.*

So my question is: What is it about capital ships that makes otherwise reasonable, nice and pleasant players go completely lolwut just by the very sight of them, and what can we do to get those players back on the right track?

*Ofc some capital ship pilots are arses, just like some bomber/fighter/transport/gb pilots are too, but these are not the ones I am talking about here. I am talking about totally regular and legit roleplayers that happen to pilot a capital ship.

Simply put, a tard in a VHF is relatively easy to take out. A tard in a dread is an utter nuisance.
Thus the hate towards caps.

Because of the very chance that they might become a nuisance.

EDIT: Actually, you might notice that many people have adopted the "All caps are lolwuts until proven otherwise" approach to ingame interaction.

EDIT2:

Alright, it was a very TL;DR sort of answer. The thing about capital ships in by their nature is that you require either many people or you yourself flying a cap to take one out. No matter how good is the cap player's RP, they still are flying a ship, which you cannot deal with, even if you yourself feel that you are a good snub fighter. It means no matter how good you feel you are, you simply technically cannot deal with a threat and it is very, very disqueting. It makes people feel unseasy. The very nature of a capital ship means that it requires others to take it out. What if you are a lone wolf, so to speak? Then you are stuck tounting the guy, usually with jabs like "Get a fighter and then we will talk" sort of thing.

Funnily enough, this distaste also carries over from that unlawful character onto any lawful alts for that player. He just ends up hating every cap ship with his ID out of principle. Because no fight he encounters them in, he can do anything about it. It is a feeling of helplessness that is very unpleasant to any player, who thinks they are good at snub pvp.

So if I am getting you right it is sort of a reversed epeen syndrome? "Yours is bigger than mine, and I don't like it" kind of thing, and they just have to react to that rather than just cruise/thrust off?

Well, yeah, pretty much. Imagine if you are in your unlawful snub and enjoying a snub fight. You know you can kill the guy. Then an LNS shows up and even though he can't technically kill you, you still know that there is absolutely nothing you can do about him. A fight that was as good as done is now at a standstill, because either your opponent is now hugging the cap or getting botfed or, in worst cases, the cap opens up on you as well.

Heck, even just the mere presence of an LNS on your radar, even though they are only observing the fight is infuriating, because you KNOW it all might go south at any moment.

How can we help these players adopt the universal principle of judging other people by their actions first and foremost then? Or is that a lost cause?

It is.

Very few capital ships show restraint and even if they do, it only pisses off the people on their side, because they are essentially contributing nothing in a fight.

You just can't win in a cap.

Unless like me, you abandon all pretense of giving a toss about ''fair play'' and adopt the mindset of "If you bring a hostile ship to a battlefield, expect to have everything thrown at you and deal with it."

The guy was more than likely having a bad day. He probably just got out of Liberty or something after being chased for 2 hours by - let's say, two/three Firestalker-spamming Guardians, six dreadnoughts with no roleplay, fifteen missile-equipped LABCs and an assortment of Bounty Hunter/Freelancer/corporate Solaris boats for good measure.

That's how it usually goes, anyway.

What stops the snubs from moving to one of the designated areas for snubs?
