RP is when you pretend you are a skilled ex-military pilot, tearing through space, looking for your next contract to kill.
PVP is when you prove you are one.

Thing is you can RP without PvP but you can't PvP without RP.

Expecting not to get PvP unless you OORP consent to it is mutually exclusive towards RP.

That's like cutting one of your legs off because you can use a wheelchair. You can also RP without talking and just roleplay as text appearing on somebody's ship computer, but you'd be kind of neutered, wouldn't you?

@ Haste Very true, but there isn't any point discussing factors out of our control. It's in the same vein as the age old problem of the inability to roleplay somebody more intelligent than you.

@ Papa Oomaumau Also true, but this is due to a multitude of factors stretching nearly a decade back. Discovery has never had any mission goal, any stone set stance, about what kind of place it is aiming to be. Many people fall into the flawed notion that roleplay is only typing, which leads to quite a lot of rage on their part when they explode. I'm very inclined to believe that in a new community with a more clear ideal in mind, this problem is one you'd see much less frequently, and people could actually choose how they wanted to roleplay their charactes rather than falling into the mindset that their way is best.

True, and I personally get into PvP quite often, but still there are people who play explorers, gun merchants and similar (without even having pvp char)

So...I get their point of view as well.

Chase.Way - Yes. If more people could 'get' other's ways of playing, much less QQ would abound, on all sides.

Durandal - Just more yes all around.

Both quality PvP and quality RP are skillsets.
Each earned with dedication to honing your craft. Neither comes easy.

Knowing exactly which way to side-trust and tighten a turn with a blast of thruster and a slap of the EK key, drop 3 shots on a moving crosshair and twist away - that's not easy. Once learned, a certain pride comes with it.
And should.

Knowing how to totally forget your own ego and slip entirely into your character's mind. Thinking and even feeling the way your character does - forgoing the group laughter/chatter of a furball to live in the singularity of your character - that's not easy either. A certain pride comes with it.
And should.

The day that one can admit that neither is superior, and both have equal merit - if measured differently - is the day that the two can truly, honestly, become compatible - and mutual exclusivity can waft away like a fart in the wind.

Voted yes, because the more a faction/player wins at PvP, the more heavily nerfed their equipment becomes. Thus the harder you try to justify your RP as an elite pilot by being one, the more you're penalised by factors outside the RP environment.

I just love it when people complain you ruined their RP by starting a fight.

RP and PVP are different subjects.

RP = environment building ruleset.
PVP = kind of activity in said environment.

So basically RP rules + server rules are creating environment in which all the activity is happening that include but not limited with: pvp, rp conversations, forum conversations, in character actor play, etc etc.

So basically the question is put in incorrect manner.
