The same is true for Disco life. Many of us joined years ago, had most fun back then and didn't quite learn how things really work (on all levels of the community) for quite a while. But when we did learn, it was not fun any more, the mystique was gone, illusions shattered, the true bitterns of LIFE, DISCO life became clear to us.

When we point at FL's age, we point at ourselves. FL has been the same for all that time. We have changed. We grew old. Games are eternal, the world around them ages.

These deep thoughts. You are very true, and the feeling you pointed out is really as it is.
But after all such a feeling drags the nostalgia, these memories of days back ago are what keep us returning to this little world time after time.
Yes, we can`t return that feel of mystique, but we can keep stories running. Aren't the stories we build upon this game is the thing we enjoy? Isn't it the only thing we enjoy here?
What actually we enjoy, still, after years, playing here? Can we recall such things? Can we cultivate them?

This initiative for dynamic commodity events has just started (and needs to be pinned for visibility). Feel free to link an excerpt from in-game events or a story you've got going and suggest how it may have some impact. Although it's just single commodities for a limited time, if there's enough support and popularity, perhaps it will translate to broader changes.

I know it's a vague statement at the moment while I compile them, but overall, I'm definitely for more additive changes.

what people dont realise is the tiny snowball that was started off long ago, is now a gigantic deathball.

the problems with disco are many and varied, and at this point there is nothing that "save" disco. just prolong its slow decline to death.

Gallia issue: great idea, but the implementation (as has been said many a time before) was a failure.

General mod stuff and dev'ery: the near total disconnect between players and devs, combined with the stagnant story, fubar lore and long periods between any changes certainly didnt help. add in the shambles that is the current dev team, and well... the effects are obvious.

it would take a sizable highly skilled dev team to reform disco, and thats just not a realistic option.

Here's a serious suggestion that I'd like feedback on, and I think it was mentioned earlier by a few people but relatively glazed over.

What if we open the dev forums? Completely. Allow for submissions, which the devs yay, nay, and give feedback on. It's done like this in dozens of mods for other games, some of the more popular are Tamriel Rebuilt and Skywind. In order to get onto the dev team, people post a sample of their work. This would lighten the actual workload of the devs we have now by giving them people to delegate to and allow them to work on more conceptual things, like balancing trade, PvP, et cetera.

This open developer's community would, hopefully, attract outside developers with a love for space sims. They would maybe bring a few fans along with them and, overall, allow for faster growth. If people saw that the community was developing rapidly, dynamically, and invited everyone to participate in the development, I think we would be more appealing.

If people like this, I say we write up a formal proposal to the powers that be. I'd volunteer my Thomas Jeffersonian hand.

You want to save this mod? Start focusing on the new blood instead of pouring all your attention into vets that are already making noises about leaving but saying "but if you give us this cookie we might stay".

You've got plenty of new players, but you choose to ignore them because they aren't up to the standard that took you 5 years to reach yourself. Loosen up a bit and help these guys. As you sow, so shall you reap.

I haven't read the whole thread so this may have been said before but I think Freelancer has just done it's time now.

I came back to Discovery and played for a bit but it didn't feel the same as before. Things change and the mod progresses but that doesn't change that freelancer is an old game and the veteran freelancer players are moving on. Everyone's getting older and our lives change.

This is just a natural progression of a game and it's unstoppable. This mod has done superbly so far but it can't go on for ever.

Yeah, others have said that, Bird. But thanks for posting! It's good to bring another into the dialogue.

However, I refuse to believe that Freelancer/Disco is just dying of age. Morrowind was created twelve years ago by Bethesda. The game has all the bells and whistles that Freelancer does, even a few less (like attacks that aren't calculated by percentage of likelihood), and it still has a massively burgeoning player base and development community. It's not even multiplayer.

If a neighborhood turns into a ghetto, it's because of the community; not the ground upon which the houses were built. This is why I have so much hope for Disco. This is why I believe we can make a positive change.

You rely too much on a game that in itself is unstable and increasingly going to be worse as the years pass.

I think that what we need is more participation in the forum, not only for the delegates of each faction but also for the new guys. Places where arrange meetings for the people with little time to simply fly arround, or create story competitions for duels or even large fights.

I don't belive that this be "the solution" but I think that is part of it.

This user talks little to none english. If you find something wrong tell him.

Reading the post after my first one here I'm truly sad about what I've learned so far. To be honest: I returned because I thought Disco never dies. Not because it's superb in every way but because the "brains" behind it and the community is great. -Was I wrong? Haven't all of YOU kept it alive because you did give love to the game?! You created worlds, you created stories and histories...

I repeat a few of my first suggestions:

1. Put the story 80 years in the Future.
2. Shrink the verse
3. Make the game easier to INSTALL and UNDERSTAND.
4. There should be a small group of people who try to advertise the game and create attention.
5. Create polls for some small and big steps (not for every step) to give the community a direct connection into the game.

As I see it and what I learned the last days: There is a huge change coming and we can just whine about it and the good old days or we can sort things out, ask who is onboard for Freelancer Discovery 2.0 and start it right here, right now.

- We need a group of "wannabie-devs" to support the actual devs.
- We need some merchandise/advertise for the relaunch.
- We need "fresh blood" when it comes to history and perspective.
- We need people who are ready to close a chapter and start a new one!
