As Hoodlum stated Here there is NO excuse for F1ing in space. Thanks for the clarification Hood.

My connection to the server has been lost many times. Fortunately it has never happened while being pirated or while in combat, but if it did, I would return ASAP and contact the other player involved to explain the situation, apologize, and offer to fly to their location and either pay the amount the pirate was requesting or, if a combat situation, allow them to make the choice of an uncontested kill or pick up where we left off.

The option should always be given to the person who was inconvenienced by your crash or loss of connection.

The punishment for F1ing is harsh, as it should be, but give people the benefit of the doubt, instead of filing an immediate F1 report on someone, give them a chance to make it right. If they return and you are in the same character they should contact you, if not contact them. If they just blow it off then file the report.

If I ever get DC'd in space while in a fight or being pirated.. well.. in a fight, I'd rejoin ASAP and let him kill me (unless, of course, he wants me to continue). If I'm being pirated, then I'd give the pirate triple/quadruple the original amount.

But most of the time, if it's just a quick disconnection (not my modem catching on fire like before), I try to get back in ASAP. Otherwise, I guess I'm screwed.

THIS is the best answer i have heard to this problem yet. I have a linksys router and it disconects me often, should i stop playing?, no, the situation should be treated as above and we should move on in our lives, no "im reporting you", or "im gona hate you forever now".

indeed. I for instance, was forced to F1 out twice; once was because of a power shortage during a violent snow storm, the other was because my parents forced me to close. For the first situation, hopefully blunt communicated to the opponent for me. The second one, had to log in as quick as I can to explain, and paid the fine. But I could have been not that lucky. Would it have been fair to get a harsh punishment because of power shortage?
at that point, we'd have to stop playing when theres a snow storm outside merely because it could get us to f1 out accidentally..

Throughout all this I have never seen a complaint from a trader that a pirate F1ed out on him while he was
robbing him blind, or from a pirate who got away because the forces of law vanished while they were kicking
his ass from here to next Tuesday ... Funny that.
The DCs, and real life only seem to happen when its one way round ... And I could wallpaper a room with the
excuse chits I have heard now. Why is it my comp only ever goes awol when I'm up in a confrontation ?
Never worked that out, just call me an old cynic ...

Hoodlum, it's because they don't complain. Nobody complaints when something good happens - even if it's they were having loads of fun RPing, people usually just wait until the DC'd person comes back online, or continue on ahead without them - they certainly don't go to these forums to report an F1 incident.

Likewise, for the most part, we only remember bad events, because that's when we're most liable for getting our characters wiped clean of credits/weapons/whatnot. If a pirated DC'ed while pirating a trader, the pirate isn't going to be thinking "Oh crap, I'm going to get reported now, even though we weren't in combat and I was the one pirating him." But if it were vice versa, and the trader DC'ed, then the trader would be more like "OH NOES IM GOING TO LOSE ALL MY STUFF CAUSE MY STUPID COMPUTER LOST ITS INTARWEBZ" and therefore cross their fingers and hope that the pirate didn't report him/her.

So to clear things up a little.

Hoodlum is of course absolutly right here. You were very lucky I got disconnected! So why complain?!
This mystirious BHC guy has been me! I was CHASING Mwerte in his pirate char. Then I got kicked. And as I already told you in game I DID NOT USE F1. Why should I when I was actually on your heels chasin you?????? However I managed to get in again and you`re 14k away. Nevertheless I managed to get you again and you nearly died the second time!!! So:

1. if I would not have been kicked out you would have been dead for sure
2. I spared your life on the second occasion cause you we`re already whining about my logoff
3. I don`t see no reason at all not to resume a fight after a logoff!! And actually I believe if somebody gets kicked in a fight he HAS TO go on again otherwise I would consider that CHEATING and send to the admins.

Till now I had a few occasions when I or an enemy got kicked and so far eveybody came online right again and everything was fine again! So much so....

because you had fled the battle according to the rules, and since the other guy involved in kicking me out of Manhatten was also gone I stopped to teach the new pilots at West Point a lesson when suddenly you attacked me AFTER you had fled the battle.

I was gone and you had no chance of catching me before I got to base. I stopped because to me you were dead and SHOULD have ignored me at the very least.

because it's against server rules? hmmm, fancy that. There are some rules, both here and in RL, that I do not like, agree with and even outright oppose, BUT I am still bound by them.
