I have managed to make a starsphere (buggy, but it works) with Treewyrm's help.
Now you can see a planet itself and a fictional planet in starsphere.
Looks like it won't recognize lighting, but for that I can go cinematic way : make a sector of sphere, draw some fine texture and make it look good.

I've seen the idea of a single large system many times over Freelancer's years but it has never been feasible. The game doesn't like more than 10 gates/holes in a system. Has this been overcome?

There will be one gate per "zone"...I wouldn't name it system.
