Just curious as to the spread of preferences regarding role playing. So, what is your favorite game, and why?

For me, I prefer GURPS because of the general utility.

Let's see. 1st edition advanced DnD, 2nd edition, 3.5 edition. I still have all the 3.5 materials and most of the 2nd edition stuff. Rest went missing over time. I've done Greyhawk and Dragonlance stuff but mostly I did Forgotten Realms (Faerun) stuff. The most important stuff I have is my box containing my massive collection of NPCs I've written over many years as a Dungeon Master from 2nd edition on. I've got unique colourful characters to draw upon for whatever profession or reason if I run adventures.

Sounds very much familiar ;-)
I didn´t like 2nd Edition very much but I love 3 / 3.5. Just can not get friendly with 4th up to now.

Shadowrun is nice, too. And I always liked playing Call of Cthulu , with the right GM and lots of Candles.

Vampire the Masquerade is a good game too, but I prefered playing that as LARP.
I like Werewolf too, but nowaday I rather go and do some Medieval reenactment if I want to play in the mud. Mage the Ascension is best playd in P&P though...

Mostly did D&D, AD&D 1, 2, 3, 3.5 for (Ravenloft, Faerun, Greyhawk, Dragonlance, Darksun) Shadownrun, battletech/mechwarrior, Star Wars and Pathfinder.

Most memorable though were the ones from MW/BW rpg where we ran a 4 year campaign. good times.

To be honest, the only PnP I've played was WH40K like 11 years ago. Too bad I do not possess any people around who'd like to run PnP RPG nowadays. Aside of that, I was leading RP with no stricter ruleset for some time with several people.

Sad. >_>

My own little mashup Tongue

While D&D is alright in some aspects, the fact that it's based on a tactical combat simulator kind of holds it back a bit. However, with some editing, it makes a good base to expand from into a more comprehensive roleplaying system.

There's also Polish system in the space-steampunk universe, called Crystalicum. Neat one, I even own a book, but never got chance to play with anyone.

I personally love Shadowrun, although I recently played more of the black eye (Being german you cannot avoid this) and also I converted TBA to match the world of the Elder Scrolls. That was one hell of a lot of work.
