This is something I always wondered about. I am a person who does not tolerate snub combat. My reflexes aren't good, I could probably become more or less average, but that would involve me having to actually spend hours of my my already limited time shooting pixel ships in conn. That being said, the implementation of TS/TZ back in 85 was clonky and poorly done, causing huge amounts of distress to snub-lovers, which worstened the gap between people who prefer caps and ones who prefer the more vanila ship of choice- the VHF.

The capital ship stigma is as strong as it has been years ago and it seems that it will not pass unless snubs and caps cannot physically interact with one another anymore. So here's a little What would Happen if it would Happen scenario.

TS/TZ is removed. What would you do? Would you rejoice? Would you stop playing? Would you START playing? Do tell.

Turret zoom removal for sure would get my vote. The only thing I've ever used turretzoom for was taking whole-ship screenshot from a distance.

As for turret-streering, I see no reason why should it be removed, because it actually would make caps unable to be steered without exiting turret view. It's not like caps are operated just by one guy, isn't it? Also, it affects freighters, gunboats and battle transports, because they heavily depend on ability to steer, given how poor their strafe is. It would simply kill their ability to strike back.

For me personally PvP would just lose it's enjoyment. I can fly my snubs, but I enjoy caps the most. Fleet battles are just loads of fun. The majority of the server partakes in the use of turret zoom/steer and removing it wouldn't be good for PvP.

More or less TS/TZ getting deleted would be akin to Snubs getting deleted. Admittedly though, if Snubs (or at least Fighters) got deleted PvP in this game would become hugely more accessible for players and could lead to better gameplay overall for everyone (sun).

At first you may disagree with that statement, but if you think about it long and hard you can't help but admit it makes some sense 8)

i liked ts/tz on my snub just to see how good it looked ,because the actual usefulness was close to none i missed it,stopped playing snubs and moved to caps

so...caps..its not the only option of removing it from stopping interactions between the two major classes(snubs/caps)

you can also remove/lower speed of strafe+forward speed and make guns slower so they can only hit caps and flaks will have to deal with snubs after they get a buff

People want to believe that God has a plan for them.
They don't wanna believe that anyone else does..

For me, it would make cap vs. cap combat more interesting. Flanking would have sense and gunboats wouldn't rule the space any more, for example. Snubs, however, would, so the removal of TS/TZ would require the stats of caps and their weaponry to be significantly improved, if we want to keep the game balanced.

That way of cap combat is the one I got used to in 4.85 though, so I might be biased. Someone who bought their first cap in 86 might find the change a loss, on the other hand.

I see your point, Thunderer, but the problem is there are ships that heavily rely on ability to steer in order to avoid SNAC or Nova to the butt/face. Otherwise (without buffs as you stated) it would make them sitting ducks.

What about removing it for gunboats and freighters? Leaving this sort of maneuvering for the really heavy ships?

I think the best approach is to limit TZ depending on ship class, with freighters getting just one or two clicks, gunboats getting three or four, and so on. There's absolutely no reason for gunboats and smaller ships to be able to zoom out to the point that their ship occupies a single pixel in the center of their screen.

This requires flhook work, however. The removal of TZ would not.

I think turretsteer is simply a "logical" / "realistic" feature that should stay.
