Howdy.
This suggestion does not fit the original thread posted HERE regarding the restriction/allowance lines within the IDs. The topic of this thread covers the actual information apart from the restrictions written on the IDs.
The TL;DR version of the suggestion is very simple. To separate the descriptions of the factions and the faction IDs and have them fulfill two different purposes:
*The descriptions found under the Reputations tab when you click on any of your reputation boxes should be describing the faction and should be written in a roleplay-like manner.
*The descriptions found in the IDs themselves need to cover gameplay and examples of gameplay of the particular ID and must be written in an oorp way.
With certain IDs, they should also host a platform for very small tutorials regarding game mechanics.
What does this mean:
Let us take a look at a random ID. Currently it is written in a similar manner that we see in our proposal thread:
1 Name of the ID
2 Description of the faction <- Leave this for the F8 tab.
3 What it can do and cannot do
4 ZOI
5 What ships it can or cannot fly
The proposed layout would be:
1 Name of the ID
2 What it can do and cannot do
3 ZOI
4 What ships it can or cannot fly 5 Description of the ID gameplay
6 Tutorial (for certain IDs)
The reason for this change is very simple: the text found in the ID is redundant since it is the same that can be found in your reputation tab and the wikipedia page.
Instead of explaining things that are completely out of context for new players, it should instead act as another piece of the tutorial system. It should explain what this ID in particular does on an everyday basis and what can the player expect to be doing with it. In the cases of certain IDs such as the Miner ID and Police IDs for example, it should also have a very brief description on how the Mining System and TLAGSNET works respectively.
One of the biggest problems for new players is that they do not expect to need to visit the forums for such information. Our post-2010 gaming treat tutorials as an internal part of a game and most players these days expect to find all of the essential information inside the game. We should take this into account.
This change requires a bit of effort to be put into it however. I would suggest a google forms link posted by the admin team with a text limit of Y characters for the IDs in order to allow either the community or faction leaders to submit said descriptions. Not only that, it also requires the F8 descriptions to be expanded if necessary. The tutorial part of the ID can either contain a condensed version of how the mechanic works or an explanation of its existence with a footnote to seek the full tutorial on the forums.
So in the end, this is how the ID should look like:
"Liberty Police Inc. ID
The pilot carrying this lawful ID is a member of the Liberty Police Incorporated who:
Is allowed to do the following anywhere:
-Can trade
-Can defend itself and ships of the same affiliation.
Is allowed to do the following within their Zone of Influence:
-Can demand contraband and levy fines from any ship, then attack them if they refuse to comply
-Can attack ships which are in violation of Liberty laws or belong to a house or organisation considered hostile to the Republic of Liberty
-Can defend allied or neutral lawful ships and bases
-Can escort traders
Is not allowed to do the following:
-Cannot ally with unlawfuls or participate in unlawful actions
-Cannot use any transports with more than 4,300 cargo.
ZOI: Liberty, systems directly bordering Liberty
Allowed ships: Fighters, Freighters, Transports, Gunboats, Cruisers.
ID Gameplay:
-Players with the Police ID mainly focus on inner-house gameplay and almost never venture out of their respective ZOI. They not only are expected to provide protection for other lawful players within their territory, but also are in charge of using tools such as the TLAGSNET in order to detect criminals and catch smuglers. Players belonging to the official police factions also have the ability to lock down bases. Many players also tend to play their police characters as corrupt individuals, taking bribes and sometimes purposefully ignoring unlawful activities.
Tutorial:
-TLAGSNET is a ingame chat command that allows your character to scan any player's ship that has used a tradelane or jumpgate within your house. Once you start TLAGSNET, it will report all ships entering and exiting lanes and gates. You can use the presented number-ID of the ship name to scan its cargo from anywhere within your ZOI. For more information on how to use TLAGSNET, please visit our forums on Discoverygc.com"

This actually is a neat idea. I'd actually say keep the description, but the ID Gameplay and Tutorial sections are a fantastic idea to add to each ID. It would help newbies get an idea of how to roleplay a faction, such as what you've done with LPI as the example.

A good suggestion, wholeheartedly agree with the tutorial, but I agree with @"Snak3" on the ID and IFF thing. Although it's preferable, there's no rule forcing you to use the IFF that matches the ID, so making the description seperate from the ID would cause confusion.
