No. It is bad at the moment.

  1. Mollys cannot haul Gold any more to Gallia, they lost their seelling point. The activity was good and fitting for Molly-GRN rp.
  2. GMS have a 4x on Aluminum, but Picardy field is screwed (too small rocks, fast moving rocks). Bonus on Gold (steal Dublin gold), but can't sell it (can't move from Dublin to Bretonia to NB). GMS is just totally screwed.
  3. IMG was de facto thrown out of Rheinland by a non-storyline Dev who has always hated on IMG and is biased heavily towards Rheinland factions. The only field for Silver is of course the one that IMG cannot go to law-wise, and it has a Core 5 Kruger| PoB in it to even make piracy-stealing impossible.
  4. Mollys are screwed by the Gold field placement (and that filling a BMM 5ker takes less than 1 min) Big Grin
  5. Gold has a x3 additional multiplier, making it 3 times faster than any other field.
  6. IMG Cobalt field in O3 has 50 % lower drops than standardised fields
  7. By far not all fields are standardised
  8. Platinum field in Alberta has ultra-fast rocks and small hitbox rocks. Unminable, like GMS Aluminum.
  9. [...]

I could go on, I helped Karst (who is the numbers' guy) to check on fields and the findings sometime make you laugh, and often cry.

It's hopeless, though, because the only person who Vipex will listen less to than me, is Karst.

Make @Karst the mining dev. He and jammi have this covered.

The mining system definitely needs some huge alterations, variety of ore prices are unbalanced, PoBs in mining fields, factions without sell points, non-efficient mining fields... the list goes on. And it's been like that for a notable time. Time to change maybe?

Though I couldn't comment on it at the time, I don't remember this thread ever meeting with a valid, well-reasoned response to all the criticism contained within from our resident mining dev. In my personal opinion, that's indicative of one (or both) of two danger signs: either @"LordVipex" doesn't feel like those outraged by the changes therein are worth his time to bother justifying his changes to, or he simply doesn't have anything worth the time it takes to type to back up his changes.

I'm no expert when it comes to mining, but I trust the judgement of people who mine extensively (such as @Jack_Henderson, @Karst and several others) when they make complaint after complaint, repeatedly stating their opinion that the changes introduced are massively flawed and require urgent and extensive reworking and/or further attention to bring them back in line. Something like this slipping through the net is, frankly, inexcusable, and shows both an utter lack of quality control related to the update and a lackadaisical, lazy approach towards fixing this and any other outstanding issues.

Even I have noticed problems with mining from my own limited Discovery worldview - the inexplicable disappearance of Gold Ore from the GMS ID (to the best of my knowledge) being the main one I would highlight. I can only imagine the contents of whatever mega dossier @Karst is compiling might have. Frankly, I expect it to be quite damning.

Indeed. The Coalition used to have Ore Sellpoints in 52. However the last update to the Mining made them cease to exist. Sad

Mining is miserable to do right now and is a bit messy. It needs to be fixed soon or else folks will eventually stop playing mining factions.

Basically what Henderson said, make @Karst the mining dev because him and Henderson are probably the two most qualified people for the job

If you guys could give examples of what you dislike / like about the current system instead of just @karsting that'd probably be more effective.

Main problem with mining system is dev that does not understand how mining system works in larger scope.

My biggest beef with the mining system is the approach itself.

I remember back in 85 when ore still dropped, it meant that you could make huge ore clouds with small ships and PM random people ingame to try and sell your wares - it would also allow pirates to come to your pile of 50k ore floating around and point their CDs at it - gief monies.

It was fun. It was dynamic.

My wholehearted suggestion would be to make ore droppable again, but instead increase the drops per rock, but decrease the chance significantly. This would solve the problem with server load. Meaning you can get one drop of , say, 1k ore after shooting Y rocks. That and remove the ability to mine for your own transport. Since returning to the old mining system would seem like a step back, please at least make it so that solo mining is impossible. That you MUST interact with players in order to get the best profit. That also means to make ore unplacable on POBs.

This, however, might be too radical of a change and the later part could cause huge problems with people who made POBs just to store ore.
