Throw more money at the server, that might help.

You can't really counter a UDP flood.
Besides, you can have the best DDOS protection in the world, if the kid throws enough money at it it will still go down. See LoL, Warframe, WoW DDOS history.

Actually, I use packet filtering to prevent these issues.. In my routers. It is no guarantee, but it does help a lot.
