Hey, I’ve been recently thinking about cardamine’s effect on outcast reproductive system, life expectancy and how will it likely affect their society in general.
I’m aware that it kinda prolonged outcast life expectancy by the factor of two, maybe even three, but the major drawback was dramatically reduced fertility. Now that I thought about that I’m curious on exactly how does it works.
I don’t actually know about any variation in people’s fertility in real life; they either can ¬ or cannot ¬ have a children, based on my observations of family couples I know. Let’s actually make a honest side-note and point that current demographic situation in developed countries suggests that there is already a fertility crisis over there: people rarely tend to give birth to more then 2 or 3 children, unlike they used to do one hundred years ago.. (just imagined woman after her tenth childbirth, it’s almost like a baby machine-gun!) And fertility age is indeed somewhat short, maybe 20 to 30 years long.. so, yeah, gotta start doing it myself soon, before it’s too late!
Now, back to fellow outcasts. After my above assumption I came to conclusion that vast majority of outcast population on Malta is completely sterile (much like the krogans), not even having a chance to make their own baby. That makes that small strata of people who somehow preserved their sterility the most valuable asset of outcast society, even more important than cardamine plantations’ owners themselves! I foresee that these fertile people would likely form some sort of a closed loop sub-society, perhaps a few “noble” family lines, and these families’ one and only business would be breeding. Every couple within that family line will reproduce as much as possible, since that is their main duty to the outcast nation. Of course, there will be some crazy stuff there eventually – like mad eugenics and even inbreeding – in attempt to breed most fertile couples together to produce even more fertile child. Most of that children will surely be sterile too like any normal caradmine exposed person – and other outcast families, who cannot have their own children, will adopt these children as their own to continue their respected dynasties… paying the breeder family considerable “reward” for that possibility. And these “rewards” will be the main income for the outcasts’ breeder families. I think it’s okay to give sterile children away for that families, since there is no use for such a children in family, whose only income is breeding and selling children for adoption… In contrary, those few children who inherited fertility from their parents will be family heirs, although they could also be sold for a considerably bigger prize..
And then there will be venerable family elders who had the most children in family during their short fertility period (remember it’s 30 years while they’re still young, and after they cannot have any more children and they just keep on living for two more centuries). That mighty family patriarchs and matriarchs, and their brothers and sisters waiting them do die to take their place and plotting in shadow against them.. so many possibilities for roleplay and storytelling!
And there is of course a slave stream coming to Malta. Guess what, many of them are breeding slaves, either male or female! I imagine them to be forced to breed by above mentioned breeder families to be their main production (ehm) force. They will actually breed with fertile maltese inhabitants to produce more children to adopt, who will also have a higher chances for being fertile too.. and still counted as outcasts.
So there will be following stratification on Malta in that matter:
1) Fertile pureblood outcasts – these will be the top of a cake, elite society members and potentially family elders, like a medieval nobility;
2) Sterile pureblood outcasts – to be adopted by regular (but still wealthy) families of Malta and continue their dynasties;
3) Half-blood outcasts – children of a breeder family member and a breeding slave: sterile ones are to be adopted by somewhat poorer families (they will still be counted as free Malta-born outcasts without any legal limitations of their status); fertile will stay in breeder family to marry off to another breeder family or next-generation reproduction (and their children would be considered pureblood);
4) Slaves and slave children – no additional comments needed. They are expendable resource to be used.
