So I was looking into replacing the Freelancer music with something a little more lively so I'm less likely to fall asleep during quiet trade runs, and I found the .wav files (Program Files/Microsoft Games/Freelancer/DATA/AUDIO/MUSIC), but I ran into a problem. Specifically, Winamp seems to be unable to play them, leaving me unable to determine exactly where each is used. I mean, in some cases it's obvious because of the filename, but...

Anyway, has anyone else had that issue? Anyone else tried replacing the music, and if so, are there any potential obstacles to deal with if I simply grab an MP3-WAV converter and get to work on the replacements?

I haven't looked at the file itself but I'll pull one out and see what codec you need, etc. Microsoft some time back didn't "conform" some of their wav standards to universal standards and those older files might not play in newer players--that is probably the case here.

I'll find out for you if I can--please someone else answer if you actually already know the issue.

VLC Media Player. Very compact and no clutter. Also compatible with nearly everything.

That's odd... they're standard WAV files, and I have no problem playing them in WMP 7 and above. Strange....

They are custom WAV Codec's and different audio types than a standard WAV file. VLC plays them I think. I've changed the sound files in mods before and it is fairly easy if you know how.

I'm something of a techno artist myself, I mix my own songs with a multitude of programs so if it's music you need, I have it.

Well, assuming it's not as easy as simply sticking some correctly-named .wav files in there (then again, for Ragnarok Online it was that easy), could you explain it for those of us who don't know?

Assuming you haden't tried this yet...
Windows Media Player does play them.:D

Also, I belive.. well im about to try it anyway, will update this once i try..
But if you delete all of them files, you will no longer have the sound glitch from minimizing and restarting it.
going to try it now....

... ...
It seems to be working fine, just incase if anyone were to do this, i recommend you saving your files, in a diffrent folder...

I looked the files over, they're not standard .WAV files. Seems ol' MS tried to play a trick on people and used the MPEG Layer-3 codec to encode them.

80kbps rate
2 channel
22khz
MPEG Layer-3

That should be all you need to set to get files replaced.

Microsoft broke conformity with standards at one point and when a new wav standard was made official they--of course--came out with their own. About six months later they gave up and conformed but now we have the legacy of some of non-conforming files.

I just used a WAV converter I found, and now have Ride of the Valkyries as my Rheinland combat music, as well as some other altered tracks.:PDidn't seem to have to do anything special.
