So if i read this all correctly i have a situation where the pirate who is killing me can be sanctioned if he does not stop.
Heres the situation: pirate from about 13k out HALT MELEE (melee is me) I keep going since he has no real chance to catch me as he is busy pirating a fellow trader. I make port sell my cargo and leave port.
As i come out of the mooring fixture and before i even have control i am blasted into atoms. I ask the guy WTH and he informs me that since i did not stop when he told me that i am now on his "KOS" list and he will kill me without warning or demand of money when ever he see's me. I try to tell him i would have paid if given the chance and he tells me that i lost my chance to pay when i ran. Unfortunately i am still a little new at the game and did not get a SS of this or i would have reported it.

I mean come on you guys who are pirating you expect every single ship to stop just because you are in the same system and say so? If you have a reasonable chance to stop me or are firing on me i will usually stop and pay if i have the credits. Most of the pirates i have run across are not that unreasonable. But my escaping does not give you the right to kill me every time you see me after that or to make demands so high that i cannot pay them just so you can kill me. Also some form of role play would be nice since this IS a role play server. I mean if your entire role play consists or "HALT give me $$ or die" you may want to go back to CoD4 where you just run gun and die.

This is supposed to be a GAME for FUN so don't take it so seriously

Here's what's wrnog with what he did:
-Dock raping (against the rules)
-Killed you without making a credit/cargo demand
-Asked you to stop from.. what, 13k away? That's plain silly.

And pirates cannot have KOS lists. EVER. They can have people who they tax extremely high (that they know they won't pay), but that's a tad bit abuse in my opinion.

Simply report them next time it happens.. you can get them in big trouble.

I'v had it happened to me just yesterday. I've taken screenshots and reported it. It was quite strange indeed, because this pirate, all he said was "Halt", and he said it just as I was heading into the jump hole. Not exactly great piracy in the making considering that any decent pirate would catch me before I even approached it. So I went through, he said halt mind you on the private channel to me and not system channel, so I returned the favour once I was through by taunting the fact that he was too slow.

About 10 or 15 minutes later, I head back into Sigma, I get caught and as I was expecting him to ask for money,, what did he do? Aye, blew me up without saying a word and he felt that he was right too.

I'm not bothered by it tbh, I'm not into breaking the book over someones back over a little thing, but if its against rules to do so, and considering he did it in such a voilent way, best report it before it happens again :P

While this might seem redundant, always be prepared to screenshot. Sad to say that's the way it is, but it keeps the server clean.

Are you so sure? If I were you I wouldn't be. That doesn't mean strictly Kill On Sight but it's quite equivalent to that.

Er, yeah, I should've been more specific. They can't have a KOS list for traders. KOS as in.. see, shoot, no demand made. You can, however, demand insane amounts of things (for instance, cargo AND credits) just for the purpose of killing him. Even though this trader has done horrific things to you, you still have to make a demand.

Did I mention KOS for specific traders? Did I mention anything about "see, shoot, no demnad"? You did, not me.

Review Lane Hacker Diplomatic Status and Piracy Policy and you will see what I'm talking about.

No, pirates cannot.
You will find the rotting remains of those who have, littered amongst the sanction threads.
It may not be the easiest thing for a trader to prove in their rule violation report, but some have, and the pirate was sanctioned for it.
Pirates are not terrorists, and those who behave like it suffer for it far more than their victims do.

There have been some reasonable points made. And some unreasonable ones. And some flames. And I think a puppy got caught in a crossfire.

Let me throw my two hay-pennies in.

I have a Trader as my primary character. And I have worked hard to make the money I have (point of pride: never done the Nobium run, but that's irrelevant).

I RP. Its why I joined. Does that mean I stop everytime I see a pirate? Hell no. My Merchant wants to get his cargo through - I see a pirate on scanner, I head around him if I can. That said, I HAVE and DO stop for pirates when the situation so demands.

Like CD's and gratuitous plasma to my shields. That tends to stop me.

I have had some EXCELLENT RPing with pirates before. In one instance, the pirate did some great innuendo-laced polite niceties.
'How are your passengers, sir? Alive? Dangerous parts, these. Bet they're nervous about rifraff that might space them.'
I payed him.

I have also had some EXCELLENT RP fleeing a pirate. It was a game of cat and mouse with this dude, flitting the edges of the system while we both faded on and off our respective radars. He knew where I needed to get, and tried to hound me at every step - I was lucky enough to get past him, and not pay.

Let me make my point. There are terrible RPers that are Traders. There are an equal number of 'kthnxbai' pirates. To make any sweeping generalization about either group is a fallacy.

As much as we want to be able to fix a rule here or there and restrict these bad RPers, we cannot. There is no utopia we can set up with the rules because at the end of the day it is the individual choices each player makes that will add up to a pleasurable or unsatisfying RP.

By all means, work with diligence to ensure that the self-serving human drives are curbed by adequate rules. But you cannot 'fix' RPers with rules. Not gonna happen. Ever.

Enjoy yourself. RP to the best of your ability, and have fun as best you can. Anything beyond that will only end in frustration.

Morality, like art, means drawing a line someplace.

I must have missed this one last time it was posted...
After reading it, I have a few questions hopefully someone can answer ( Don't want a sanction card in me hold!)

1. If I am pirating & stop a freighter (Usually "Halt & name of ship") & the freighter does not stop, I know I Can CD him & pound them to a pulp ( leaving a sliver of hull) & make my demand. Question is, what if they dont stop after being CD'd? Say I make 2 more attempts at demanding cargo or money, keep them cd'd & they still try to escape, is it then ok to destroy them?

2. Ok, I am out pirating, say the "Halt so & so" they hit cruise & haul tail.. I have not fired a shot & they make it out of CD range, am I allowed to engage cruise to catch them?

3. my favorite & happens more frequently lately, I catch a ship coming through my trap. Say "Halt Whats ya face" I get "no speak English" as a response... Ok, usually I let them go lately for fear of a sanction, but it has gotten to the point every third person uses the "No speaky engrish!" line What would be the proper etiquet for this situation?

4. How long do you give a trader you successfully stopped to pay or drop cargo before letting them have the business end of your long irons? Myself i give them 15 to 20 seconds to at least get the trade window open UNLESS they role playing which I will give them all day as I love to see a good role played out encounter. But have had a few say " give me a minute" then SHAZAM! they either try to run ( at which point & CD & torp em into dust) OR 3 fighters show up to save their bacon. SO, if after max of 30 seconds & they have not opened a trade window, can I rip em a new one?

I would like to add most traders Role Play the situation pretty well & make it fun for both involved.. just those few out there that have to go & mess up a good day pirating.

Thanks in advance ! :D
