Wow so much drama...I never get it so bad...where I call in Cap ships...The most I ever been taxed...or kindly gave out a forceful donation (Oxymoron statement) Is 5million. Though...I was only in a X-Shuttle. It was tad bit extreme...he killed me...I login back in to go to colorado....but...he followed me and killed me again. That rat...

I prefer to change the trade routes and God knows there are good amount of trade routes in Sirius. Why pay the ridiculous amount of 5m+ to a pirate. If you come across a second pirate maybe of another faction in that route you have to end up paying him too? No way. I would rather change route then pay all my 2 hours of trade earning to them.:)

You can also damage them as much as you want.... but NOT kill them before demanding cargo.
That's what I thought. (Asking for too much is against the rules.)
Asking for more than two million will probably not get you anywhere. Except a death message and about 4000 spare units of commodities floating around. (This part adds to server lag.)
Some pirate kill me because i don't want to give him 5 milions at one route. Other people in space said him that 5 milions is too much but for him it wasn't problem. 5 milions is too much for everyone. I think that this is not good for RP and for game.
Threatening, scaring, force them to feel the death coming in order to get their money. So you don't really need to ask prior to fire. The fear of death is enough to make him understand the threat prior to making your demand.
But kill... kill is the PvP end of a RP situation going in two different directions. You are in a bomber or fighter, you just cannot loot enough for the risk you're taking. So you're extorting money, RP wise, it means that you need to scare them to death but not kill them. If they are not scared, that is because they are ready to defend their life and it is a viable RP option. if they flee, you loose, period. Do you really need to kill him ? Imagine that the same trader after a fight see his death coming and surrender. In fact, you fired at him, he replied, no words were exchanged, and suddenly comes the "I surrender". What will you do ? Be honest with yourself... will you kill him or negotiate ? Will you say : "next time we meet you will have 2M for me. You have one week"
Now, if you have a transport available, blowing the ship is a perfect option, no witness, you have the full cargo. Kill is a available RP option, and if the rules were not here to avoid a kill without asking for money or cargo, you could be a murderer and a merciless pirate in transport and ALWAYS get money by piracy. No conditions. You see, you kill, you take.
In a schoolyard, some do racket, beat their comrade to force him to steal money in their parent's purse and give it to you. Do you kill him ? No, you scare him to force him to give you money.
In ocean, you can raid a luxury boat, stole the jewelry of the passengers, take them in hostage and ask for a ransom. Kill passenger one after the other until the ransom is paid. You will kill to look serious. You're a not loosing the face, just becoming more serious.
Killing intentionally with a reward is winning and to do so only a Pirate able to loot a juicy cargo can have this feeling. All the rest is frustration because RP goes in two directions. Kill because they refuse to pay is just a way to not loose his face. Killing someone is just vengeance when you cannot collect the loot. To kill is to sanction.
We can come every month with the same problems of piracy demand and ooRP trader. All that matter is "Do i RP my Pirate to be taken seriously and get money." and "Do i RP my trader to save his life". unfortunatetly, if the trader do not want to RP, well, too bad, ignore him. Killing him will just bring the pleasure to give him a lesson. Is it a RP attitude ? No. It is the result of a failure of communication, the RP is over, the PvP have taken the first place.
Are we able to resume RP after a PvP ? Kill is a win in a PvP but loose in RP.

Well, oniros, that was quite intelligent and there are good points in your post. However, the biggest problem with traders in my opinion are the ones who metagame. You know the type, the ones who buy the trader ID and get an advanced train, abuse the rep system, "lol" at pirates and quote non-existent rules against you. The ones who prefer to die / F1 out of the game rather than pay up, as they cannot be bothered paying any sum of credits (I've heard cases of traders F1ing over one unit of cargo). Until the problem of metagaming is solved, I believe there will be no solution to the Trader vs Pirate situation.
Metagaming traders slowly but surely impart their mindset on susceptible pirates. The pirates then metagame, hence the "2 mil or die" stereotype emerges. The true root of the problem? Not pirates. Not traders. It's metagaming.
The going rate for piracy / taxing use to be about 1m, which for a trader in transport [2000] isnt too much, an amount that most traders would willingly pay; now the piracy / taxing rate is has reached stupid amounts, with demands ranging highest 8m.
Pirates seem to forget that there a lot more pirates out there in Sirius, sometimes far too many!
The going rate now is around 2 million credits, down to 500k credits if the pirate is nice. Anything above that is either: metagaming pirate, or an actual RPed demand (a Red Hessian wanting to bankrupt a diamond shipper, a Lane Hacker wanting to bankrupt an Interspace/Ageira player).
I don't see how's 3 million overtaxing on the route where train makes 15 per run.
There are some places where I pirate and ask for bigger cuts on purpose, to either move him from the route forever or to at least make him think about how oorp his route is.
