So, now it's my turn to ask for help. Never encountered such issue before.
In about half cases when I try to launch Freelancer, the game crashes as soon as the main menu should be displayed (immediately after intro movies/splash screen). Screen goes blank, display switches off, sound continues playing and later loops or disappears. There's no workaround except for hard reset.
I have GeForce 9600 with 512 Mb RAM. Didn't launch Freelancer since I've bought this video, so it's most probably related to it. Got latest drivers for the video, and original drivers for motherboard. Did not encounter problems in any other 3D games I tried to play (and there were quite a lot of them). 3D sound in Freelancer is disabled.
Any ideas how to resolve this? I really hope that someone could help me for this one. If I'll have to build a separate PC for testing Freelancer, the work on the new mod version will be delayed... I'm afraid to think for how long.
Go in to FLMM and restore backups, uninstall Freelancer, reinstall Freelancer, run vanilla Freelancer up until you to get to the main menu, then close the game. Activate Discovery, and play. ^_^
It may be the Video card is just too advanced, what I would suggest, is, on the drivers, it should come with a thing similar to ATI's Catalyst Control Centre.
Somewhere in it, there should be an option to turn down the power on it, basically, make it less advanced.

That worked for me last time those crashes occured. So I can second that.
If the display is switching off (going into standby?) then is most likely a problem related with your video card.
If D-boy's solution is not working you may have to try switching default refresh rates. Stick to 60hz.
Reinstall DX, but this time don't use the one from you got on the video card's CD, down one straight from Microsoft.
Trinity means NVidia Control Panel. It's possible that there is a small setting to tweak in there, I'm not sure. To be honest, it's a new one for me.
Edit @Nikolaus: Dunno if that's a good idea. The latest DX is too bloody far ahead of FL. Best to install the one on the disc.

And yeah, try nerfing the card as much as you can from nwiz.cpl (or how nvidia calls its app nowadays).
If you manage to log and start the game, enable them progressively until it crashes.
FL may not do well with advanced pixel shaders and uber antialiasing.
I have a 8600GT and i cant use the latest drivers for FL. I have to use the drivers that came with the card. Or a back dated driver. If i use anything else the game will not work for me.
