UDF assert political influence in new Federal Government
NEW BERLIN - Following last month’s snap elections in the Bundestag, Chancellor Neumann retained control of the government through a coalition between her Federal Conservative Party and the left-leaning United Democratic Foundation. The two adversarial parties are unlikely partners, with the UDF securing a number of promises and concessions in exchange for their support. While many UDF supporters had expressed concerns about enabling a Conservative government - citing their historic abdication of leadership to corporate and monied interests - there are early indications that at least some of these commitments may be realised.

It has been a long-standing UDF manifesto position to seek reconciliation with the politically radical Bundschuh, who are currently defined by the Federal Police as a left-wing terrorist organisation. UDF representative Lisa Möller argued during the election that the Bundschuh's criminalisation had itself "created an inevitable cycle of violence by autocratically silencing avenues of peaceful protest and reform". In a stunning reversal of the FCP's prior positions, Staatssekretär Karl Graves announced a formal review of the organisation's status. Calling for Bundschuh activists to lay down arms while the process was considered, he advised that officials would throughout the week, "hold meetings with our government and heads of state security to evaluate this procedure."

The announcement proved to be immediately divisive, drawing a sharp rebuke from the Imperialist Party. Daumann Director and Imperialist MB Albert Kelsen declared that the only way Bundschuh pilots should 'get to live' is if "they surrender and answer for their crimes before our courts [..] like any other criminals". The UDF have sharply retorted that such rhetoric is ‘divisive’ and “merely seeks to continue to repeat the same strategies and mistakes that have demonstrably failed for almost 150 years.” Providing a rare public comment, Direktor Enfield of the BDM also appeared to disparage Kelsen's views, stating "we're not your Private Military whom your corporate boards dictate who our enemies are". Despite this, Chancellor Neumann's Cabinet have taken pains to stress that any movement towards reconciliation would not be a blanket amnesty that "wiped the slate clean" and "turned a blind eye to extreme crimes".

Further signs of UDF influence can also be identified from the Federal Government's renewed scrutiny of Bretonian expansionism in the near Omegas. During the so-called Aland Nationalisation Crisis, the then FCP majority-government was criticised for its passive response to the appearance of imperialism on its borders. While contemporary wisdom held that the matter was a purely domestic issue between the Bretonians and the IMG workers' collective, the permanent seizure of the station has long term implications for the volatile region. As revealed through leaked diplomatic cables by the controversial governor of Hamburg (Linus Von Claussen), the Federal Government has taken an increasingly proactive stance on the incident's treaty implications.

These discussions have come to a head with the Federal Government publishing a striking public announcement calling for the return of the station to IMG ownership. Even more surprising was the demand for Bretonia to repeal its Wartime Powers Act that grants broad executive powers to the Crown's War Cabinet. This unusual stipulation on another House's domestic affairs appears to be an amendment pushed for by the UDF, who have long been concerned that anti-democratic extensions of royal prerogative in Bretonia could have a motivating effect on Imperial Restorationists within Rhienland. Despite this, IMG sources have privately distanced themselves from the declaration, unwilling to become ensnared in a dispute between House governments.

Well placed sources within the Auswärtiges Amt have since advised that the negotiations with Bretonia subsequently broke down, resulting in a notice being served upon the relevant signatories to formally void the Treaty of Snowdown. It is believed that this will result in the Houses falling back to the baseline territorial provisions made by the Boorman Treaty. After concerned local Zoners independently provided our correspondents with copies of the document, Süddeutsche Zeitung can exclusively confirm that Rhienland has revoked its prior recognition of the Nottingham System as Bretonian territory, and will be initiating proactive patrols throughout the region. This represents a significant escalation of the ongoing war of words.

It is currently uncertain how this situation will develop further. The Treaty of Snowdown was originally drafted in order to settle border conflicts between Rhienland and Bretonia. These conflicts were themselves partially instigated by disputes over patrol and access rights. There are distinct fears that a miscommunication between Bretonian and Rhienlandic patrol craft in such a volatile region could lead to disaster. When asked for comment, the Bretonian Government declined to discuss the specifics of the negotiations, but advised that 'trade, investment, loans and savings associated with the region would be unaffected'.

I hope diplomatic channels are to be established soon with the Bundschuh. From my experience, most of them are by no means evil people (a bit passionate, maybe) and their message deserves at least to be heard...

My trade routes are going to be cleared up, then? I see this as absolute win.

Wonderful news! In democracy every opinion should be heard. Unfortunately my House, Bretonia, is slowly creeping into authoritarianism.

Please help us!
