Well, for those of you who don't know, I got a new PC. Well, I rather got the parts for a new PC, and am nearly done building it. All I gotta do is transfer the hard drives, all of which will not fit in the case I am constrained to use at this time. Anyways. That aside, I'm going to be running backups and then be off of Disco/Skype/Xfire for a while, longer if I mess up and have to reinstall. I'm hopeful that I won't mess up though. Any ideas on thermal paste? How much to use? Specific location on the processor?

Oh, and for those curious types: My comp specs (new).

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition @ 2.6Ghz

2GB OCZ Platinum DDR2 PC2-6400 @ 800Mhz

MSI K9N Neo V3

EVGA nVidia GeForce 7200GS

A helluva lot of hard disk space

EDIT: Err, I did mean to say this a bit clearer:

Anybody got any advice on the installation of thermal paste? I got OCZ FreeZe.

I fix computers, not build them, I dont even know why you would need thermal paste. And Im guessing is that its either a paste that heats up, or prevents heat.

Thermal paste....It goes between the proc and the heatsink. It facilitates better thermal conductivity, lowering CPU temperatures by as much as 30%.

I'm just curious as to how much to use.

put a bit on the middle of the processor, then spread it enough to make a small layer covering the processor.

But do NOT use your finger to spread it as some thermal pastes are harmful. All you need is a thin even coating. usually as you press the heatsink onto the CPU it will spread itself to cover it but not so much that it comes out the sides. You may want to check the heatsink as most come already coated with thermal paste.

OCZ FreeZe, supposed to be non-toxic. I'll not be using my finger to spread it, thanks for the heads-up. I heard somewhere that a pea-size drop is appropriate?

This heatsink doesn't have any on it, I cleaned it up after the previous use. (I bought it from a friend and he had some on it before, so I removed that to prevent contamination)

yuppers, a pea size sounds appropriate.

Sounds good as long as it doesn't come out the sides you should be good to go. Lol i only know from helping my wife build computers. She builds custom gaming rigs and let me tell ya they are sweet I have one myself and she built hers as well and about 10 others all very happy gamers;)
Oh yeah she says a Q-tip works well to spread the paste.

i used an old credit card to spread mine, and a pea sized drop is fine, as long as it covers the whole cpu after spreading.

Thanks!
