Are you going to get the entire faction to rename their ships too?

I sort of agree in regard to direct imports without deleting the trace links with original characters(although most of my chars is using pictures from Andromeda TV series too), I think the conclusion with Doc you have gone too far. While Doc is utilizing the name of the RL character, I never saw him using the photos of that character. Only the account picture may look familiar, but it has nothing to do with RP.

It's not like I get any pleasure out of telling a veteran, whose character is almost universally appreciated by the playerbase, that they need to change up the character's name. Several people rightfully pointed out that we had a bit of a rules for thee but not for me situation enforcing the naming rule the way we did, and I don't much love the idea of conveniently exempting a staff member from the rules.

For what it's worth, I do stand by the Dylan Hunt sanction. It's a straight import - picture and profession included - not unlike naming a character "Captain Jean-Luc Picard". The only real difference is that Andromeda is probably a lot less popular than TNG. If that goes, anything goes, really.

I'll see if the staff can discuss and resolve this situation today.
Doc never used the import image in roleplay, that's my biggest issue, Dylan has, and it ain't a historical figure.

Should all the navy factions rename their ships because they reference real life things as well?

You might as well rename every single solar and system because they reference RL too.

LH~ uses these alias to hide whatever previous name and surname character had inRP. So it's kind of a odd spot because that's the whole RP premise of using those names. Sweating in LH~ discord for sure though.

I haven't been playing for a while, but figured I'd give my 2 cents. I hope it helps, if only a little bit.

On the one hand, I feel for those who have been asked to rename their characters lately. Doc's and Dylan's warnings probably gained the most attention (because there's a lot of quality RP associated with those names), but it would be unfair to stop just at them; I recall a warning about LotR references, and maybe a few others. Personally, I consider it going too far. On the other hand, I do see where the staff are coming from. And I don't envy their position of having to decide between the spirit and the letter of the rules. All of that on their own free time, instead of playing the game or doing something else.

Regardless of the staff's choice, there would've been disagreements: either this one, or one over "favoritism" and "What about faction/person X?". That's because compassion, justice, and doing what's right aren't always the same. I've actually enjoyed this example:

The Lane Hackers have been using pop-culture references as their "public identities" for longer than a decade. By the letter of the rules, they need to rename most of their characters as well. But would that be a right thing to do? Definitely not, for it would ruin the identity of the most immersive faction out there. Ironic, considering that "war on references" is all about RP and immersion.

That does leave the question: "Where do we draw the line? What's more important? Maybe it's the transparent and unambiguous rules that apply to everyone. Or the immersion of people playing the game on the server. Or maybe it is us being accommodating to all members of the community." Any of these answers draws a different line and carries certain risks if overdone. A sanctioned player might leave the server. Rules with a lot of clauses could be too intimidating. But a lack of them could lead to diminishing RP (which, arguably, is the thing that's been keeping Disco going) and make a new arrival disappointed with what they thought was an RP server.

What complicates things even more is that every member of this community draws the line at a different place. I'd consider "Darth.Vader" inappropriate for the setting as well. But Elite: Dangerous allegedly has NPCs like "Mace Windu" or "Hotpants" (either to emulate "real players", or simply because a Commander just so happened to pick that callsign). So the people who name their characters that way on Disco either don't know the rules, aren't checking the forums, or find it appropriate. Some even went through that phase towards being some of the best RPers out there, all without sanction notices in their hold.

I don't really have any "right" solutions here (because "right' is subjective as well). Even the obvious "Consider how and why decision will benefit or harm the community" might lead to different answers. I guess I just wanted to offer words of support: not only to those affected by the newly-enforced policies (these "warnings" kind of look ridiculous), but also to the staff. Being in charge of anything important means getting some flak, whether or not the decisions you make are ultimately wrong or right. So I just wish you to weather through it and find a solution that works best for the community and its individual members.

In this case, it was a one-second decision that made perfect sense at the time, almost entirely because Doc is staff. That's all there is to it. There is no Staff Bias Shadow Cabal or Staff Anti-Bias Shadow Cabal or Staff Anti-Doc-Holliday Shadow Cabal. The majority of people have been pleasantly calm about it and simply posted their disagreements, which we all ended up agreeing with. This is just about the most minor thing someone could rupture their synapses over. It's not that deep.

I've realized that this is much bigger than just Doc.

I was curious, so I dug back and the previously most talked about topic on this thread was some issues about VR, streaming, and RP....it lasted only 15 individual posts max.

This currently debate/discussion is now well over 30 posts long.

If it was just the usual crowd like Lemon, Saronsen, and Godslayer commenting, I can understand how it would be easy to dismiss this as a small issue. And in a vacuum, if it was just Doc getting a random warning for his character name, I sincerely believe this thread and forum would not be blowing up like this.

But it's not happening in a vacuum, and you have people like Demonic, Avalanche, Semir Gerkhan, myself, and a bunch of other players I haven't even met before in the game or the forum commenting and concerned about this.

I sincerely believe that it is because effort is being put into addressing letter of the law things like silly names, instead of addressing the much deeper issues of unsportsmanlike behavior that has been popping up in the server and forum (ie. the Kansas Incident).

If a bunch of people were walking down the street and started falling in a sinkhole and severely injuring themselves, it would be expected that the city would invest resources in securing the area around the hole and filling the road so that in the future people are not hurt.

If instead the city sent several police officers to a road the next block over and started issuing tickets for jaywalking...while continuing to do nothing about the sinkhole on the previous street...it would be completely understandable if the locals started vocally protesting.

Guys, seriously, you need to do some checks before making an example out of people - how many sanctions that need to be amended is this now?
https://discoverygc.com/forums/showthrea...pid2315916

100,000,000 for a cloaked ship watching a player disconnect? You will have to redact and lower that. Again. There is something seriously wrong in the last couple of months in your process. It started with that dual overturned Alucard ban and keeps happening.

As Haste mentioned in the thread you linked, the point of fines is for them to fine the player. As you'd expect. However, a player with krillions of credits will in fact not care about a 5 million credit fine. So fines have to scale with a player's wealth. Discovery has never done this, and as a result, many people have gotten """""""""sanctioned""""""""" and received virtually no punishment. That doesn't sound very fair.

Disco 5.0 simply dumped Barges into the sh*t.

Would whoever makes/made the decision regarding the barge PLEASE front up?
Explain why what was done was done, and what are the plans for the Barge.

Why did those with inside knowledge of the changes start hocking off their barges and not embargoed from doing so?

Where the HELL is the Development Team and why has there been virtually ZERO information on the changes, why, and what is happening?
