2. Background

The Easy Life (805-823)

Kristoff was born in 805 on Planet Denver to a loving mother who worked as a Cryer physician and a stern but fair father who worked as a sales manager for Interspace. He was raised with his brother in the sprawling metropolis of Crichton Springs, the capital city of Planet Denver, surrounded by people and colors as far as the eyes can see. This lively environment was Kristoff's home for many years, as he lived an early childhood of scholarly education and fierce brotherly rivalry with his older brother Charles, much to the chagrin of his parents. In spite of this, the once young Kristoff lived a happy and solar childhood with multiple friends, with one Brandon Bryant Rivera becoming his favorite for many years to come.

As the years went by, this once endearing competition between the two brother grew tiresome and sometimes outright violent, as Charles quickly established his presence in the household as the reliable and vigorous older brother, which caused Kristoff to grow envious as tension between him and his parents became strained and often painful. Kristoff grew to be less solar and more suspicious of others. Instead of living in his shadow, he quickly learned that success can be achieved through sleights of hand and creativity, especially through cheap tricks learned over the Neural Net. Any shortcut felt valid to him, so long as he would achieve any kind of success over Charles. It wasn't long before he began to outright forego his well-being, relinquishing physical fitness and good health as well as his friends in order to focus intensely on his studies in a last ditch attempt to outpace his older brother, with limited success.

This harrowing, self-damaging urge to be better only intensified as his mother passed away from a fatal hovercycle injury shortly before he would reach adulthood. Kristoff would grit his teeth through his despondence during his studies, achieving him a mediocre academic success by thoroughly stealing notes and studies from his fellow students with no remorse or regret. Soon, he was gifted a second chance by his father, as he granted him the opportunity to enroll at a local university in Crichton with Brandon by covering his expenses.

This new change in his life allowed him to mature and to think independently as a person, as he began to share a rented flat with his best friend. Gone were the days of narrow minded, stress-addled studies. They would prowl the streets together on their daily commutes, quickly getting used to the vastness of Crichton, learning shortcuts, recognizing which routes to take, memorizing the better Kusarian restaurants who would offer the most delectable ramen, where to find shelter during the rain, and quickly recognizing order in the chaos of the Mile High city.

They became inseparable, despite them both attending entirely different courses at CIRT. Kristoff would specialize in Engineering, Net Technologies and Robotics with passable albeit acceptable grades, while Brandon majored with flying colors in Biology, Astrology and Chemistry. Soon, their relationship grew, and so did their lofty plans: to ultimately reach for the stars and live together as researchers in a shared spacecraft. Their knowledge would ultimately help them overcome the hard rigors of space, Kristoff would patch the vessel into shape, and Brandon would run carbon analysis on anything that appeared to be particularly of note. The stage was set, their goals clear. All they needed was to scrounge up some funds.

Mile Low (823-825)

Not long after graduating, Kristoff went along a significantly different path than the one he had intended to walk with his beloved. An internship contract with Ageira in Pueblo seemed like a promising way to come back home to his family with promising exploits of success. This came at the cost of losing touch with Brandon, straying further and further away from him as the hours spent on Pueblo became more demanding and strenuous.

He had the opportunity to have a brief Ageira flight training course during his time in Pueblo Station, as he was assigned as a docking bay ship intern technician. He was quickly taught the tools of the trade, learning how to maintain gadgets, from insignificant silicon boards to complex machines, gaining a particular enjoyment to specifically dismantling, reassembling and tuning laser weapons well beyond their factory-imposed safety settings. He became fascinated with plasma, shifting the emitter rods as though they were scalpels on marble. His newfound passion would only test the patience of his employers, who fired him from the Ageira employee database shortly after his self-centered acts of "science" during work hours caused multiple XV-series engines to combust into flames, causing thousands of credits worth of damage.

In a furious fit of frustration and misery, he chose not to return back to Brandon or to his family, but rather, to skulk alone in the streets of Denver, spending his days soaked by the rain and the cold as though he didn't have a home to go back to. He fell into a deep depression, unable to come to terms with his failures, feeling wronged by life, wasting the last credits to his name on cheap drinks until he would pass out.

On a cold, stormy December day, a particular scout clad in glistening violet armor found him alone, contemplating life on the edge of a rooftop.

Techno Shamans (825-830)

The Technocracy welcomed Kristoff, now known as Lazurith to them, into their fold as part of their family. Kristoff was quite hesitant in joining a militant and belligerent organization reviled by the Houses. His initial intentions was to only serve them to rebuild his fiscal reserves, until Joshua Hunt saw potential in him, and led him into a new classroom of trainees such as himself. He was taught a great deal about humanity and how it strives to endure in this day and age. To his surprise, the instructors did not find his eccentric ideas and occasional outside-the-box thinking to be a waste of time, but rather cherished it, a fine fit for the Research and Development branch of the Technocracy. He would have his very own access to their resourceful laboratories, where he could finally experiment with laser and plasma technology to his heart's content, going as far as proposing a few weapon modification schematics to the local quartermaster.

Hunt himself would often pass along his teachings, treating him like almost like a son. His daughter imparted hand-to-hand combat training to him (with little success), and Foulke supervised the learning process of acquainting him once again with the right and proper basics of space flight. His initial forays simply consisted in supervising and replacing repair drones situated near the drydock, until he slowly began to join exploration convoys around Inverness. After the passing of Hunt, his desire to explore the stars never died as the years went by. His continued forays eventually led him to meet a particularly haughty and meddlesome individual named Raven.

As he grew closer to her, a gradual exposure to deeper truths of the cosmos began to unveil - he witnessed the Nomads, he saw his friend Vincent die to a dire plot, and ultimately met the Sentinels, scornful beings who know naught but to chase and attack relentlessly. Upon learning about her condition, he sought to stay by her side to not let her die alone and leave her children behind. An endeavor which would unfortunately only endanger him further, spreading the stench of death even to his closest friends. Some disagreements would dramatically change the dynamics between Raven and Kristoff, who began to see him as a flaw and a liability. To avoid endangering his friends further by her wrath, he retreated away from the Technocracy, until an atmospheric re-entry gone wrong nearly took his life.

... And that's how I got here (833 - Present Day)

After the crash of 830, Kristoff fell into a deep slumber. His body was recovered at the behest of Levan Harlow, and he slowly healed for two long years, encased in a cryogenic pod while his injuries were being treated, cell by cell, ligament by ligament. After emerging from that Cryer Clinic, Kristoff found that time had done little to heal the rift between himself and Raven, even further straining their relationship and resulting in Kristoff's further disillusionment with the Technocracy. They would lock horns more often than not because of his choice of friends. But at last, an opportunity presented itself. In a frenzied, fugue state, Kristoff struck a pact with an entity named Harbinger, long known to have struck deals with the Technocrats, to grant him a fragment of himself in his mind - a Key, to open a Daam K'Vosh cache situated somewhere in the depths of space. This caused the stage lights to quickly zero in on him. For a time, multiple parties with an interest in the Vault saw him as a tool to make use of - even the Nomads. Time and time again did they try to break his mind. The pressure was becoming unbearable. The enemy was simply behind every corner of Sirius. In spite of Hunt's return, Kristoff left the Technocracy once again to try to live his own life away from it all, unshackled by orders or duty, free to live as he sees fit. Unfortunately, his sudden change of heart did not satisfy the enemies of the Technocracy, who now long to assassinate him to perpetuate their feud against his kind.

Stalked by his actions and his past, he now wanders Sirius alone, picking up the occasional odd job for a modest fee.
