Nowadays I lack the time to do the heavy grinding again to become "good" again + my super hardcore edgy ego and tryharding is long gone, at least in this game.

The amount of time I invested back then was insane, sometimes I would spend + 5-6 hours per day in conn just to get better.

It's cool to see how Wesker, Chills, L1ght and so on became really good players and overtaking me while I had my primetime in 2018-2019.

In the end, if you want to become good in snubs and compete with people that are aces, you have to invest some good amount of time, otherwise you will never reach their level.

Having people scream/complain/villainise at me for existing in any fight I joined, and I do mean any, got very tiring and draining to be honest. Be it either for 'unbalancing' or 'ruining' a fight or simply flying with people whom I enjoy the company of. That's why I stopped. It just stops being any fun when all you can ever do is make someone else mad.

The competition is way too strong for me, honestly.

Quite honestly? I never saw a reason to because my default "I just throw random sh*t" moveset kept me above average for the past five years on quite literally all shipclasses. My GB skills are frozen in time since 2015 and put me up with the real good ones now apparently.
Aspiring to become ace tier has no reason in Discovery for me, since outside of conn the likelihood of actually dueling another ace is extremely low. I actually consider it to be tiring if I dominate an opponent too hard and go out of my way to do goofy nonsense in duels then.

The time argument also adds on it tbh, 2020-2022 I had the time to train but never saw the reason. Now I would additionally lack the time too.

I can still deal good dmg to our aces so why would I care for more?

For me, I grasp the fundamentals of the mechanics and that gets me about as far as I need most of the time.

When I first started playing Disco, I had a 54kbps connection and was so laggy that anything except the most casual PvP was more or less impossible anyway. That led me to exploring everything else to do in the mod instead and I guess those preferences got ground in pretty hard.

I also prefer playing as a support fighter, so chipping shields and lobbing missiles at people lets me happily contribute despite my mediocre aim. I also don't need to worry about unbalancing fights so much because I'm not a serious threat, and me going bang is a nice bit of dopamine for the people I'm fighting.

Why get good? Average is fine.

I never bothered fully mastering conventional snub dueling because quite frankly I'm not interested in it. Why? Fun, or lack thereof. This has nothing to do with snubs themselves, but rather the way snub duels play out. I enjoyed bomber duels back when the SNAC instakilled snubs, invested time, and mastered it. Hell, I've been a bomber-only pilot for almost a decade, and had tons of enjoyable duels. I enjoyed Crossfire snub PvP. Conventional Discovery snub duels are personally something I am the least interested in when it comes to Freelancer PvP.

On the contrast, snub groupfights are something I enjoy a lot which is why I invested time to master it. While a good percentage of skills are transferrable between groupfighting and duels, there is still a lot of nuance, especially when caps are in the mix.

This goes for caps as well. I enjoy cap/mixed groupfights more than cap duels, though I personally get more fun out of cap duels rather than snub duels. I suppose I like the joy of a group to outplay another group via cooperation, coordination, proper fleet setup, flanking, baiting, covering, and so on, compared to duels which are simplified mechanics-wise, but much more intense micro-wise.

The approach to Discovery PvP is the same as any other videogame, or any other skill for that matter. Find a reason you enjoy it (or in the case of real life skills, need it) -> find common patterns to start learning the skill -> invest a lot of time with proper reflection and error correction -> improve -> repeat -> master. If fun is missing, you are doing an uphill climb the whole way.

I used to be pretty capable and could hold my own in a lot of fights, but there was always a bar I couldn't get past. Primarily because I have nerve damage in my fingers which became noticeably worse over the years, so long bouts of high-energy dogfighting became increasingly difficult and painful for me to keep up with. That's something that is never going away for me.

Time is another factor. I'm not in my teens anymore, so I don't have buckets of free time to dedicate to practice or roaming around. Nor is there really much to do in all that time.

Lastly, mechanically speaking - it's not very rewarding to participate in fights, nor is the current short TTK fun for me personally, as I typically am out of the fight in the first two minutes or less.

Snubs:
1) It's very boring/monotone to grind
2) It feels utterly pointless as there are a few top players out there, and it's a race to the bottom. Why do I want to get gut when the end game is me having to hope the same 5 people come online so I have an equal challenge, and then vs rest, I either win easily or have to hold back?
3) Chip meta damage and regen from death killed luck factor, I don't feel like I can get lucky wins from time to time vs top players. With Nova Rams I could at least tie 20% of the time, sometimes you could have hit a lucky couple of mines + hits and won - now it's just a futile grind to death while on the way up without that dopamine rush of winning sometimes.
