I have another idea, which I hope is understood in it's premise. My format likely needs to be picked at and adjusted to be good.
'Character Sheet'
I know, we already have the setinfo but it's clunky as hell... not appealing to everyone. Ease of use is key for retention.
I propose a 'character sheet' for a ship or more perhaps aptly named, an 'Identification Sheet'. Now, this is a fair big ask and may not be achievable or warranted, however I believe it could have potential Roleplay opportunity and use.
The Idea
This ID Sheet could replace setinfo, have predefined 'fields' of sorts, by default be filled with the words: 'Data Unavailable', 'N/A' or something to that effect and be allowed for use in roleplay (optional, player discretion) as a 'I am allowed to scan this person and be able to obtain this freely available information', much how we see basic info on NPCs (kind of combining both patrols and solars to achieve that logic there).
To go even further dare I say, what about two of these character sheets?
One sheet that appeals snubcraft information.
One sheet that appeals to larger ship information.
Have you set one or the other.
Edit: Now I think about it, why not just keep the default empty one too? Not removing choice then.
Ideas are most welcome. My 'tism wants RP-related tools badly.
I'll clean this up and add it to the OP in the morning, with a link in this post to replace it.
When contending with a monster, you'd be wise to give the devil his due.
To add to that 'sheet' idea, a section for OOC info wouldn't go amiss either.
One might argue someone could do all this in set info currently with enough jank, but the idea here is accessibility, ease of use and uniformity for something that could add an additional layer to how we approach each other and interact. There has been many an occasion on an MMO where thanks to tools with formats like this, it's enabled me a 'Roleplay hook' that's often helped me bridge a divide and break the ice with a talking point based on the 'current infomation' given to me.

I'm a big fan of that as well as your first idea. Having a different version for nomads wouldn't go amiss either. It's been a decent while since someone had such good ideas to put the 'RP' into Discovery.
Can't comment much on the idea with naming and chatting as a group, as I find myself rarely in a group big enough to warrant that. Otherwise fine ideas that would be amazing, should we see them implemented.
The idea of an /emote (or /e, /em) command is simple, unobtrusive, and genuinely useful. It wouldn't interfere with existing systems, but it would noticeably improve clarity and immersion during roleplay — especially in group interactions, where quickly distinguishing between speech and narrative action is vital.
As you rightly said, many MMO/RP environments have used this type of feature for years because it's intuitive and effective. Discovery has already shown it can evolve, thanks to the dedication of the Dev Team
Captain Echo “Flying free between the stars. No flag, no chains.”

The ability to name your group.
The ability to chat as your group.
Allow group engagement messages? Which would confirm hostilities for your ENTIRE group, which yes consequences should be accepted.
I, too, am tired of being flashbanged by a wall of blue text at the start of every fleet fight, just so people can drop their mandatory /1/2s that nobody reads and contribute nothing to the roleplay or pvp experience. If the respective group leaders could just drop engagement lines for everyone, that would be grand.
