My name is Pantalião Vascoguoncellos, Agent for Bristol C&M.

I heard from another that your company operates a number of liners within Bretonia and indeed across greater Sirius - older vessels updated to modern standards to save credits on the whole. That’s a good enough thing, as I’ve come into possession of an older model of the Palace-class Royal Liner. The role to fit was easy enough, from long range personnel transfers to continuing the endless work of updating navigational charts for general sale to Search And Rescue operations, something that the prior vessel, an Oasis-class Passenger Liner, was able to perform but not perfectly. The reasons for this acquisition were simple enough, considering her size, speed, and hull compared to the previous class.

She was purchased from Orbital Spa & Cruise from their mothball fleet. Bretonia as it is, the vessel wasn’t being used as much as they liked. The maintainers at Baltimore Shipyard seem to have taken some shortcuts, however, and there are several problems with the overall navigational systems.

I’ve heard you operate two of these vessels, and being that Gateway is no BMM, I think you’ve found a few shortcuts on how to properly diagnose a problem. I’d be willing to move her to one of your shipyards, and to pay market price for the necessary repairs and space. If you’d prefer, we could also send you the necessary diagnostics and inspection sheets for a more remote repair, your engineers providing solutions and future maintenance information with Bristol completing the repair in-house. If you would rather that, I can pay you 400.000 cr for the information and aid.

Dear Mr. Vascoguoncellos,

It is good to make your acquaintance finally. We have been watching the work of Bristol C&M from afar, we like what we see.

Our small fleet does operate a number of liners, the Palace-class chief among them. For the requirements you have, I can say without a doubt that it’ll serve you well out in the vacuum. They are phenomenal vessels, elegance, class and most importantly, utility. One of the only good things to come out of BMM for a long while, I will say.

From what I know of Orbital Spa & Cruise and their operations, maintenance is completed rigorously, but with a varied fleet as theirs is, things are missed. As with anything, this is fine at the time, it’s only later on that problems arise, as I’m sure you’re finding now.

Each and every Palace-class has its own majesty, a personality if you will. We operated, as I’m sure you’ve heard, the Three Sisters; Ladies Agnes, Elizabeth and Victoria. Each of them with their own quirks and kinks that you have to work out. Master them and you’ll have one hell of a ship, suitable for whatever you throw at it. Or rather what others throw at you.

Sadly, for us the three became two. Requisitioned by the Government during wartime, now in relative peace we’ve only received two of the sisters back.

Now, to the matter at hand. While our own ships are gutted and our own systems installed to improve durability, some things simply can’t be. For these we have found favourable work arounds, that in our opinion, far exceed the performance of the original. We also hate to throw any good part away. Meaning we have a host of Palace-class parts from all models. This will be kinder to your pocket as it were.

The company is also in possession of a fourth parts hull, if anything larger than internals are needed. Though, I’m sure anything this drastic won’t be needed.

To save you the hassle of moving her to one of our facilities, I can have a team of company engineers at her berth in a matter of days. They’ll be able to assess what work needs to be done, train your own Bristol C&M engineers on what to look out for and how to diagnose faults on these old girls. We will of course provide you with extensive maintenance logs once we ascertain exactly which model she is. It is best if we disregard previous diagnostics and do things our way. The proper way.

As this is our first interaction with each other, we would like to offer the diagnostic service on the house. Parts, if needed, will be offered to you at a severely discounted rate, since all they are doing is collecting dust.

We hope this garners favour with you to do further business in future.

Thank you for your quick response. I look forward to working alongside your engineers on the issues with the vessel; I’m currently with her at Baltimore. Currently, we have a number of symptoms, with engineering on the case to solve the primary causes.

We may have to move the liner to some alternative location, however. Deep Space Engineering is providing very little help, claiming they have priority contracts with the Navy, and the berthing fee here is growing somewhat intolerable. I do expect that the majority of the work expected should be able to be done without shipyard assistance.

To give your engineers some forewarning, these were the issues with the vessel, at the time of taking ownership:
* Failure of Reactor #1 Auxiliary Power Control Board
* Failure of Reactor #1 Pressure Gauges 2-5
* Failure of Reactor #2 No.5 Coolant Pump
* Intermittent Failure of Primary Drive Ignition System
* Intermittent Failure of Secondary Drive Throttle
* Failure of Auxiliary Helm Control
Engineering reports to have solved the issue of the Secondary Drive Throttle and Auxiliary Hull Control. Apparently the primary controller for Helm required a replacement after it fused together - potentially from a power spike. The wiring is being traced now for supply. Primary Drive Ignition has also been solved following an inspection of the drive bell. As such, she is able to maneuver on emergency power, but I’m not going to push things.

Additional documentation has been sent to you on a compressed channel.

Dear Mr. Vascoguoncellos,

Thank you for providing an extensive list of faults with the old girl. I passed these onto one of our chief engineers as soon as I received them. I'm happy to say that from first glance it’s good news. None of the issues are too serious, while they look daunting, nothing we haven’t seen before, or so I’m told.

While I would still like our company engineers to inspect the inner workings of your Palace-class, for the meantime getting her moving under standard power will be our top priority. If she were closer, I would recommend mooring her to Kensington, however, we work with what we’re presented.

We have given the issues a numerical value to ease organisation when our team reaches you. I will provide a short run down of the issues with our allotted solution, with any parts that you may require.

1) Failure of Reactor #1 Auxiliary Power Controller
Solution - Replace APC with inhouse equivalent.
Stock - 1x Needed, associated software module included.

2) Failure of Reactor #1 Pressure Gauges 2-5
Solution - Sensors not calibrating. Replace with industry standard.
Stock - 3x Needed, commonly available.

3) Failure of Reactor #2 No.5 Coolant Pump
Solution - Not bled before mothball, replace entire unit. Common issue.
Stock - 1x Reconditioned Unit, currently in storage.

4) Intermittent Failure of Primary Drive Ignition System
Solution - Short in Ignition Control Module (ICM), situated in Engineering, common fault.
Stock - 1x Needed, commonly available.

5) Intermittent Failure of Secondary Drive Throttle
Solution - Known weakness, replace with inhouse equivalent.
Stock - 1x Needed, bypass module for throttle housing needed, 1x.

6) Failure of Auxiliary Helm Control
Solution - Linked to previous fault, see above solution.

These issues are completely standard for a vessel mothballed, as yours was, without following proper procedures. Moisture builds up and corrodes electronics, thus causing issues. These old girls are meant to be alive with people, keeping moisture at bay due to the heat and life support systems. Our proprietary pieces of kit will negate these issues in the future.

I’ve gone ahead and approved movement of these stock items to be brought out of storage, looked over, and loaded aboard one of our vessels. We’ll be able to manoeuvre the larger coolant pump ourselves, our vessel has cargo handling equipment onboard. This should take pressure off of yourself as the chaps at Baltimore won’t be burdened with this task. Even if we need to pull your Palace out of her berth and away from the station, we’ll be able to complete these tasks quite simply. They are not new issues to us, as I said.

Myself and our engineering team estimate that this endeavour will take no more than two days to complete. Our team will be leaving in the next few hours.

The only downside to these issues is the associated costs, which are not small, however considerably cheaper than new units. The total cost of all parts from our (Bamburgh Co.) stock is £134,512.089 cr. As your engineers will be forming the main body of the workforce, labour costs have been eliminated. Parts are priced at inhouse prices we cost ourselves, as per my last.

If all goes well, which it will, Bristol C&M will have a mighty fine vessel in their ranks by the start of next week.

If we can do anything else for you, all you need to do is ask.

Thank you for getting back to us on these solutions. Our engineering team is already working on implementing those that it can, and though the Chief Engineer is less than eager to be requiring help the idea of learning from others who have had far more experience with the class as softened the blow. After all, learning now as opposed to later, when it may be needed, is better.

I do appreciate your aid in parts and the costs for these. It’s a testament to your honesty that you’re willing to offer such discounts.

These are heavily edited by our own engineers to meet the modifications that we apply to our own vessels. If in future you would like to peruse customisations that we've developed, we have also included a brochure.

At the Bamburgh Company, the customer is our main focus, hence our willingness to do the right thing. We have found honesty works more efficiently in this cutthroat world than the usual paths of corporate dealings. We believe that while BMM sets one end of the scale, we set the other.
