I was born in 800 AS, a distant descendant, twenty generations removed, from Kozue Okamura. In practical terms, that means very little. The name does not grant rank. It does not command loyalty. If anything, it carries expectations that most would rather not inherit.

Kozue is remembered as a strategist and survivor, someone who preserved what remained of the loyalists in exile and helped lay the foundations of the Blood Dragons. What mattered more than his victories, at least in our family’s telling, was that he stepped aside. He understood that a movement built to resist corruption could not afford to centralize itself around a single will, not even his own.

That decision shaped the generations that followed.

The Okamura name was never meant to be prominent. It receded over time, deliberately so. We were not raised to rule, nor to reclaim authority. Instead, each generation passed down three things: the Oath, the unvarnished history of the movement, and the skills necessary to endure if the worst came to pass.

The upbringing was structured, even severe at times. Not because collapse was guaranteed, but because complacency was dangerous. We were taught that any organization, no matter how principled at its birth, can drift. Power attracts hierarchy. Hierarchy invites abuse. It was treated less as cynicism and more as a pattern to be aware of.

When that drift became visible within the Dragons, with titles accumulating, authority consolidating, and priorities shifting, the Oath ceased to be abstract. It was not a call to overthrow or dominate. It was a reminder to intervene when core tenets were being neglected.

After coming of age my family pressed upon me the traditions of joining the Naval Forces, reminding me of my duty to protect and serve. I didn't want to, but they made it clear I was going to be thrown out if I didn't. Training was brutal, but it did ignite the fire in me to strike hard and fast, when the moment required.

During a joint Naval Forces and KOI operation into Mu, my division was ordered to act as a distraction for the bulk of the fighting force, to act as bait in the hopes that our sacrifice would aid the main fleet. My ship was destroyed by the Order and my escape pod never recovered by Kusari. They never tried.

Order personnel picked me up, locked me away and interrogated me. I gave them everything that I knew, which admittedly wasn't alot. Being seen as a liability and unworthy by my superiors affirmed that all's I was given was what I needed, when. Eventually I asked them about my fate. I dreaded the worst, of course, but there was a silver lining. They told me that they were going to send me back to Kusari to be used by the Dragons. Kusari had used me to serve their own ends and discarded me when the opportunity presented itself. The Blood Dragons, they fought against the very thing that had left me to die. I had hope. An Opportunity to strike back.

Being an ex-pilot for the Naval Forces has made my time in the Dragons difficult, but not as unbearable as facing the family that decided I would be the one to uphold their family tradition. I speak the truth when I say that no matter the distrust I face here, I will keep fighting against Kusari. The Order allowed me to utilise one of their older, more outdated Bastet ships, simply so they did not have to babysit me all the way to Kyoto.

I have nothing to hide about my past, it has made me into who I am today. Kusari discarded me, and I will live out the rest of my days showing them that was a mistake.

I have more combat experience than I ever wanted, and the heart to accept that there will be far more gained before this feud ends.

Born on Kyushu into a family of wealthy landowners, Rika was raised strictly conservative and expected to be the feminine voice of reason. Her younger brother was the protege and sole inheritor to their families prized assets, while Rika would be a token marrying into another family for her family to leech onto more monetary gain.

Rika spent most of her days shut in reading about the worlds she could never experience for herself. She read about beauty and vast open spaces, with the freedom to explore these wonders. Things that she would never be able to experience from within her gilded cage. This allowed her to connect with Sirius on a philosophical level, and challenged the hubris that had been foisted onto her by her upbringing to that point. Reading heroic tales and poems of space pilots, it inspired a sense of justice in her, reminding her of her father’s background as a naval officer.

Takanabe's dissatisfaction with her father’s plans and strict authoritarianism made her disillusioned. She ran away with the help of her former servants, which became her new role models and confidants. In gaining independence, she could no longer see the good in her father, only someone who compromised his morals for excessive personal gain.

She navigated the world all alone, hiding from her family's thugs on the lookout. Travelling the world not trusting her sorroundings, she found help from the locals providing for her. The people's kindness inspired Rika to have faith in others. It was the first time she formed a connection with people, free from transactional relationships, which made her see what it meant to live in a community. Not money or proving one’s worth, but cooperation and pure love for the people.

Rika’s experience wasn't always easy however. She scored her first black eye for being
blunt, haughty and inquisitive and found herself in many fights. However, the law of the street required sheer pragmatism, leaving little room for bickering. This meant Rika was forced to learn to compromise, which made her more resourceful. Still, she was constantly vigilant of others uncovering her secret. One such person attempted to dig into her past, and mysteriously vanished. Rika would use their documents and ID herself to enroll at the Kusari Naval College on New Tokyo.

With Rika's enrollment into Naval College, she began sporting blonde hair, a symbol of her rebellious spirit. Her new appearance served to match her falsified documents, protecting her identity. She worked hard to earn top grades in her class, which led to her being transferred to the Space Fighter Forces. In the SFF she displayed competent physical abilities and keen leadership by applying skills she learnt on the streets. However, not all of her peers were moved by her charisma and would try to keep Rika in check.

Competing with her rivals was tough, but earned her special skillsets. Despite her best efforts, the Admiralty favoured her rivals for reasons outside her control. Rika realized her efforts meant nothing if she didn’t meet the superficial standards that are deeply rooted in classism, sexism and blind following of kusarian warrior traditions. Rika found herself in her old world, where hungry sharks in gilded uniforms plotted against each other for control. When she confronted the Admiralty about this corruption, their snide rebuttals reminded Rika of her father, who would share their reactionary rhetoric.

With her diplomatic approach falling on deaf ears, Rika began investigating this corruption to bring systematic change on her own. As a student, Rika spent her time gathering evidence, excelling in her classes and building trust with likeminded classmates. She wasn’t doing this for herself, but for all of her peers. Her devotion to her friends made her dream of a brighter future subsuming the old order.

Upon graduation, Rika was commissioned as acting Sub-Lieutenant overseeing command of the 343rd Teaching Fighter Division. With her grades and leadership skills suggesting otherwise, Takanabe wasn’t interested in joining the pristine ranks like her rivals. Instead Rika focused on her mission to denounce the corruption within the Naval Forces. Committing to her students, unlike her superiors. Her students regarded her as an honest and charismatic teacher, seeing eye to eye with her beliefs.

With Rika’s older peers joining the flock, they began priming the students for a mutiny. Rika diligently performed her responsibilities to position herself as a reliable officer amongst the crew. On that fateful day, Rika revealed the evidence of the admiralty's corruption in a fiery speech. The crew, inspired, or perhaps coerced by the circumstances, overwhelmingly supported the mutiny. Those opposing the mutiny were locked in a separate compartment below the deck. This way, Rika ensured their safety of the dissenting crew staying unharmed, if the mutiny failed.

Rika set things in motion, organizing a patrol down the Trade Lane to Shikoku diverting off to a nearby jump hole. Rika and her supporters marched onto the command bridge hacking into the local communications to upload a pre-recorded message. Arming themselves with rifles they took from the armory, they seized control of the command bridge and took the CO hostage. The message was intended to denounce the corruption and abuse within the Naval Forces admiralty, directly calling out systematic flaws and appealing to the public to join their cause. However, her adversaries were already prepared. They changed the encryption of the pre-recorded message to secure military channels and the Military Police fought the mutiny, who were helped by snitches undermining Rika’s circle.

A video feed opened, Rika, cornered by the Military Police, hissed at the faces of her old superiors revealing themselves. They called out her true identity, making Rika flinch. Disappointed by the traitors who snuck into her inner circle, Rika, unable to continue trusting the mutiny, arranged a deal, also to avoid further bloodshed. Rika faced a dishonorable discharge and erased any backup evidence on the corruption within the admiralty. The admiralty didn’t want to make her a martyr either, but threatened her of the consequences of any information leaking through.

Returning to her home planet, Rika was back where she started, even more disillusioned and apathetic. Rika wandered the streets, barely recognizing her former home. The Kyushun Storm Crisis left her local community in shambles. Broken store aisles, destroyed buildings and ravaged landscapes made up the formerly bright and bustling city. The streets were filled with impoverished people who lost access to basic human necessities. Street gangs emerged, robbing the surviving small businesses. While Samura owned cooperatives fenced off their areas receiving the majority of the humanitarian aid.

Rika, furious by them taking the spoils all for themselves and the neglect of the community, banded with local guerrilla cells, which formed out of protest. Their coordinators informed Rika about the systematic hostile takeover and consolidation of power of Samura backed elements and their history of controlling the food market. Rika was disgusted by these cooperatives making profit from the misfortune of her own people.

This made Rika question the integrity and sustainability of the current capitalist system, where it all came together. Rika decided that the current system was rotten from the core, it was in their interest to profit from the crisis, keeping people in check by alienating them and keeping them low. The entire superstructure was one castle of deceit, where each building brick resembled another fanciful lie.

Convinced by the guerilla’s cause, Rika joined the fight and gathered various insights in asymmetrical warfare. Rika offered her knowledge in training new recruits and organized raids together, redistributing resources to the poor and establishing supply lines. The coordinators, impressed by Rika’s valiant efforts, provided her with a new ship and means to train a fighter wing. Rika flies under the moniker of Akatonbo (Red Dragonfly), an old kusarian nursery rhyme she likes. Rika continues to fight for the resistance to this day, wondering if out there in the stars, she could connect with people fighting for a similar cause.

Also doing this for my folks back on Kyushu who got me here where I stand now, with expanding secure supply lines we hope to expand our options. Focusing my efforts in fighting for the people from now on, no more shall I be shackled by constructs of deceit.

When talking with one of your Dragons, they recommended me enlisting in the Revolutionary Guard. Still, I'd like to remain in contact with local resistance cells on Kyushu, aiding their efforts taking on a advisory role.

My family is one of GMG, old enough to trace employment records to the construction of Aomori itself. I had never felt as ‘patriotic’ to the company as my parents, though, and the operations of those who are keireitsu, yet claim not, are not as understanding as one would ever hope. I had been hired at Niigata for their flight operations, and through this had gained more than a few questions on where Kusari was heading, what the future would hold, and how those who had strayed from the normal society of the house had gotten to that point.

I had grown to become interested in the original teachings of those who had come before, of the founders of those organizations we were taught as radical, curious because any building, even one taught to be unsafe, has a moment as a plan. I wanted to know if the plans themselves were unsafe, if that makes any sense at all. I had been casually researching the origins and life of Yuyu Matsuda. The book is of course banned, though, and the download was noticed. Luckily, however, Niigata is a little too complex for the assassins of the house - GMG had to process me from their employ, removing themselves from my life entirely. I lost my job, and with it my room, my pay, the sliver of retirement money I had been saving, my access to care, everything.

I went to Niigata’s less savory parts quickly, disappearing there to take on odd jobs - mainly those involving the various Bounty Hunter cadres who frequented the station. It was unsteady work, to say the least, and while my resentment towards the company was great, my resentment towards the house was less so. Still, I read Golden Chrysanthemum in Bloom when I could, and whatever writings I could find on or even from Kozue Okamura.

But now, it seems, Kusari is changing even further. This is why I have contacted you.

House Kusari has taken to the path of dictators. They threaten war with Liberty and war with themselves, through their voting of radicals into power. These radicals would turn Kusari into a land of fodder and slaves, would turn GMG into puppets, and would set the House on a road of death and destruction, all for their own foolish sense of ‘tradition’ and ‘values’ and lies. This is not acceptable. The framework of the House is rotten. It must be rebuilt.

Give us a summary of your background:
Rei was born in tumultuous times. From an early age, others suspected something was wrong with her...even on the day of her birth, she did not cry. As a toddler, others eyed her suspiciously. She rarely smiled even then, and when she did, the smile never quite reached her eyes. Shortly after her 4th birthday, her father was arrested and executed on suspicion of being a Kusari sympathizer. The accusation was never proven, yet proof was never required.

Her mother and she were exiled instead of being executed, their ship spirited away into Hokkaido where they were left to fend for themselves. The GC brought them in from the cold... though even there they were hardly welcome. From this point on, Rei began her journey of retribution. She was young, but she understood what had happened to her family at the hands of those within the other clans. It was a power grab, her clan had become too powerful within the confines of Kyoto, and her father paid the ultimate price.

She learned martial arts and trained in various forms of hand to hand combat, specifically with blades. She also learned ship to ship combat and excelled at snub warfare, her dulled emotions allowing her to remain calm even during extended and dangerous combat scenarios. In her early 20s, she returned to Kyoto despite her mother’s protests. Following her return, those who had murdered her father all suffered unusual deaths; strange, accidental, unexplained, or the result of unfortunate circumstance. No evidence ever tied the killings together, and certainly none pointed toward Rei.

Within Dragon space, she earned a reputation as the "odd one." She rarely showed much emotion other than annoyance at others, but she still honored them regardless of her traits. She has kept her old GC bomber despite returning to the Dragons embrace, a reminder of her past and an assurance to keep an eye on the future.

Shinketsu-san,

Your past record, as reported, tells us many things. There are concerns about the... incidents regarding fellow Dragons. Disputes must be settled in a manner that does not compromise the fighting capability of this movement. Anything else is, at best, adventurism, and at worst, betrayal. However, some have advocated for you to be given a chance due to demonstrating competence in relevant arenas. You will have to prove your worth, and more importantly prove that you are worthy of our trust. That includes belief in our goals and mission beyond personal grievance.
