Hi everyone,
Im new here and I like your mod a lot.

I’m currently working on a project called FL Lingo, a translation tool made specifically for Freelancer, i did not yet upload it to moddb but will do in a few days / weeks. I thought maybe Discovery admins or players are interested to translate their mod to other languages.

I built this because I wanted a practical translator designed around Freelancer itself, not a generic text tool.

I’d be happy to share progress, get feedback, and hear what features the community would find most useful.

Thanks for reading, and great to be here. if this post is against rules or anything, just delete it Smile or tell me in which forum i can post progress.

see you in space

Hey, welcome!
This sounds pretty cool and could help make the mod more accessible for people (allthough english will always be needed for multiplayer).
I am just concerned it might be way too much work, especially when doing it for many languages.

You don’t need to translate everything manually. It’s basically a one-click solution.

All you need is a copy of Freelancer in your target language (for example, German), and the tool will copy the localized base text into the mod DLLs. IDs, names, and info-text IDs from the mod are only partially affected. In practice, that means the HUD, UI, factions, and most core text will appear in your language. Only newly created mod content needs to be translated externally.

My program can export those remaining texts, let you run them through a translator, and then import them back automatically. If you prefer, you can also leave them in English. This usually only affects things like weapon names, infocards, and similar mod-specific entries, so it’s generally not a big deal.

At this point, Discovery has overwritten the vast majority of infocards with its own updates. Its unlikely that using a alternate language version of Freelancer with Discovery will preserve much of that language any more.

I just tested it with Discovery and 65 % has been translated, automatically. rest is basically info cards, but the look and feel of the game is like playing the wanted language.

I dont want to sell something, just let you know that the tool exists and will be available soon to moddb. Its also usable only clientside.
Adding a API to a translation service is possible but Im not planning to do that as this comes with costs, google api etc. dont allow automatic translations without paying. So I decided to add an export and import of those texts to manually translate them via a service etc.

FL Lingo v0.1.1 is out!

Download v0.1.1

What's new:

- Reworked Expert Mode interface — the workflow is now split into clear, sequential sections that guide you through each step.
- Auto-Translation — bulk-translate all open entries using Google Translate via deep-translator. Completely free, no API key required. Includes pause/resume and a preview to review entries before translating.
- Help buttons everywhere — every action in the editor now has a ? icon with a tooltip explaining what it does.
- Full documentation — English and German help pages are now available on the Wiki.
https://github.com/flathack/FL-Lingo/wiki

How it works (Expert Mode):

- Set your mod and reference folders, then scan.
- Review and edit entries in the editor, or use auto-translation to translate open entries in bulk.
- Preview translated entries in section 4.
- Apply the translation to your mod in section 5.

Simple Mode is still available for a quick three-step workflow: pick folders → scan → translate.

I just made this tool just for fun because I didnt see anything like this on the net. It will probably improve in the future.
