We are the Independent Traders Union, ITU for short, a collective of independent traders and former corporate employees united under a single banner to foster a more efficient, less bureaucratic environment than that of traditional corporations.
The Union traces its origins to Pennsylvania, where its predecessor, Sirius Shipping Incorporated, was formed by a group of Liberty-born professionals seeking to escape the mounting inefficiencies of corporate bureaucracy and return to what they did best: moving freight and turning a profit.
Today, the Union’s core facilities are based in Coronado. Under the stewardship of the Crayter Republic, our operations have flourished, marking a period of sustained growth and expansion.
FACTION TAG & ID/IFF ITU]-
The ITU tag and the freelancer*ITU ID & IFF is used by all registered members for identification across Sirius.
It all began in the Pennsylvania system, on Planet Erie. Interspace Commerce sponsored promising applicants to the academy, seeking to cultivate capable captains for their fleet. Veteran officers mentored these recruits, guiding and shaping them into skilled personnel, formidable in both judgment and skill, ready to meet the challenges of freight and transport far from home.
Over time, these captains developed strong bonds, forged through countless contracts and missions across the Houses. They learned to rely on one another in high-pressure situations, managing unpredictable cargo, and negotiating with both lawful and less-than-lawful factions. These shared experiences fostered not only camaraderie but also a deep understanding of what it meant to operate efficiently and responsibly in a galaxy where mistakes could cost both lives and livelihoods.
Through their work, the captains also observed the limitations imposed by the bureaucratic machinery of traditional corporations. Rigid hierarchies, excessive paperwork, and slow decision-making often hindered initiative, stifled independent judgment, and imposed unnecessary restrictions on capable pilots. Talented captains found themselves constrained by arbitrary policies, unable to act decisively in situations that demanded flexibility and experience.
Recognizing the need for a new model, some seasoned captains began discussions among themselves, envisioning an organization that could preserve the autonomy of independent operators while providing the structure necessary for efficient coordination. Driven by mutual respect, shared values, and a common goal, they united to form a collective union. This union evolved into Sirius Shipping Incorporated, a lawful logistical corporation where skilled freelancers could operate with both freedom and accountability, delivering freight across the Houses without being bound by the red tape and inefficiencies of traditional corporate oversight.
Built by Freelancers for Freelancers, the corporation emphasized professionalism, reliability, and autonomy. Members could pursue contracts, transport cargo, and navigate the political and economic complexities of the Houses without being entangled in corporate red tape.
INTERNAL HISTORY
Despite the Union’s relatively unburdened existence, its members found themselves present during several of Sirius’s major crises, events that would go on to shape the organization into what it is today.
GALLIC INVASION'S CONSEQUENCES
The headquarters of Sirius Shipping Incorporated is located on Planet Erie in the Pennsylvania system, serving as the central hub for the majority of its operations. From this base, SSI focused primarily on exporting goods to the other Houses. most notably Neon and other essential commodities, along with the occasional high-demand shipment of Liberty’s finest ale.
However, these operations would soon face disruption. The war in Bretonia, followed by Liberty’s annexation of the system, dealt a significant blow to established trade routes, forcing SSI to reassess its position and future within the changing political landscape of Sirius.
The defense against the Gallic invasion in Bretonia forced large numbers of civilians to evacuate hastily to Planet Erie. The sudden surge in population placed immense strain on civic infrastructure and overwhelmed local authorities. In the early years, the situation was chaotic: many refugees, left without adequate support, took to protesting for basic rights such as education, healthcare, housing, and employment. Others, with few alternatives, turned to crime in order to provide for their families.
Amid the instability, volunteers and sympathizers played a crucial role in stabilizing the situation through personal effort, organization, and donations. Gradually, new habitats and public facilities were constructed, and local firms began integrating the displaced into the workforce. Through this collective effort, Erie evolved from a strained refuge into a functioning safe haven, ultimately expanding its capacity to manage both population growth and increased traffic across the system.
PENNSYLVANIA ANNEXED
By 830 A.S. Pennsylvania was no longer the independent system it had remained for nearly fifty years. The prolonged skirmishes between the Insurgents and the Republic of Liberty had finally come to an end, with the Insurgents decisively crushed. In the aftermath, waves of refugees labelled as criminals by the Liberty government once again fled to Planet Erie. This development was deemed unacceptable by Liberty authorities and following failed negotiations with the Zoners who governed Pennsylvania, Liberty moved to annex the system outright, aiming to eliminate any possibility of insurgent resurgence and to bring the region firmly under its control.
On the planet’s surface, detention facilities were established and quickly filled with captured insurgents, many of whom were believed to be civilians displaced from the failed Commonwealth in Vespucci. Processing was slow and methodical, with individuals assessed and often condemned based on alleged affiliations. Any unrest among the local population, once manageable, now threatened to escalate significantly. Tensions deepened, and the risk of widespread instability grew, placing Pennsylvania’s infrastructure, as well as civilian lives, in increasing danger.
This proved to be the final blow, one that threatened to unravel, and possibly collapse, everything the Union’s founding members had built. Relocation of the organization’s core was deemed essential. New York was selected as a temporary destination, where a modest office space on Planet Manhattan was secured to prevent the Union from becoming scattered and unstable.
