i don t see any problem there - the cruiser was clearly violating the rules by engaging traders.
the ONLY time he might have been allowed to fire in that battle is when the traders had drained its shields by 50% or more - so he would act in pure self defense. - but engaging in this combat was a clear violation - there is NO situation that would have justified firing on the traders.
if the corsair bomber had been aware of that, he should have INSTANTLY retreated from the traders making sure that he would not be associated with such a violation and he should have cleared the situation by leaving the battle. - the cruiser should have never even came close to the battle to "pose a threat".
or simple: warships and piracy don t go well together, no matter of the situation.
to clarify :
not even if the trader is escorted by 1000 battleships a pirate cruiser can attack. - the escorts and the traders are DEFENDERS. if they focus on escorting, the pirates must only attack with gunboats or smaller. - if a bomber attacks a force too big for itself, its his fault.
it would be like attacking manhatten in a light fighter and then complaining about being counterattacked by a few battleships. - an attacker must evaluate the situation BEFORE he rushes into combat. - retreating form a trader is no problem either... as no 4 hours retreat rule applies.
Me too. There's lots of jerks flying transports on this server who would lure you into sanction.
For Example, I was lawful and encountered a guy carrying contraband. He wouldn't drop it and tried to escape using tradelane. For a moment he stopped somewhere in the middle of it and then docked with the nearest tradelane ring agian. I thought it was just NPCs. As we reached the end of tradelane, I started to shoot him and when he was about to explode, he said, "I hope you'll love your ban, you'll be sanctioned coz you're shooting me and I don't have cargo." "I have many screenshots. Good luck in BAN". Luckily, I stopped firing in the last moment, so I didn't kill him.
Apparently, the tradelane wasn't disrupted by NPCs. He just stopped to drop the contraband the way I wouldn't see it.
This only shows that sanction reports are often misappropriated. It's the traders' main weapon which they use instead of transport turrets.

If such a case happens again, screenshot his messages and file a report for rule-lawyering and threatening you with a sanction, especially if it was done over system comms.
In my opinion, you had every right to continue the attack as you had already caught him with the contraband. It doesn't matter if he drops it out of sight in the middle of a chase.
Liberty law indicates that the cargo should be destroyed and the smuggler fined- so, if he destroys the cargo and tries to repent, then just casually lower the fine to something miniscule (like 50k) and scold him not to do it again.
Of course, the next time he tries the same trick he'd be getting the full fine for repeat smuggling and/or death if he keeps trying again and again.

Well what he did is sanctionable... post that to the sanction thread... and rip the trader...
Sometimes it's the only way to go, they report you for their interpretation of rules, and when the sanction doesn't come throu they get the message...

I must disagree with the greater majority here, the cruiser in this instance was not in the wrong.
As you stated yourself the combat had already begun between you, the RT and the corsair bomber. Now you called for help which brought the second LL over. The bomber pilot is in his rights to call reinforcements even if the said reinforcement is a cruiser.
The cruiser pilot assisted in a fight not in the pirating. You were subsiquently destroyed but not questioned again for money. The people who are claiming for a ban need to reread the rules because it clearly states that cruisers and up cannot be used for only pirating, they may be used as back up when things go to heck.
The problem is that when people think of cruisers in the situation they always think the trader isn't shooting back. The traders were firing back and therefore give up their 'pvp immunity'. The second a trader lights up they give up those rights and are fair game to anyone.
