This is the most serious poll you'll ever get from me. After certain incidents today, I went to blow off some steam by attacking Gamma alone, then left the computer for a couple of hours. Why? Well, let me tell you what happened to me today...

First, I set up a Molly Barghest to pirate with. Get one trader that doesn't pay, he goes boom. Then, a Corsair gunboat. In Leeds? Well, I commented on him being a tad out of place but engaged. No problem, right? Lo and behold, a Praefect pops out of no where, starts shooting me up, and calls me a coward for running. Right. He told me to pick my fights more wisely, as if I really had a choice there.

A few other events transpired, one in the same setting but this time involving forces of the opposite side of the fence, with results similar.

After the last of such, the person remarked that to play fair was ooRP. Indeed, this is somewhat true. You never see a single cop car chasing a criminal - you see a dozen at the least, with roadblocks ahead. You never hear of a general that limits the size of his army to equal that of his opponent - overwhelming force is always preferred.

However, here's something to consider - this is a game. We're here to have fun!

After me stating that, he said that roleplay was fun, and the person being picked on should indeed grit his teeth and take it.

Is it possible to be fair and also roleplay? Maybe. I do my best. If I notice a large number of fighters after a single target, I will call all the fighters off and challenge the one to a duel. Fair? Not to brag, but most what say that to the average pilot, he would still be at a disadvantage. More fair? Yes.

Of course, after I said that, the same person said I was being ooRP in doing so and should be sanctioned.

I said, "so sanction me" and left. And here I am. Haven't touched the computer except to check on my homework, just so I could cool down.

Tell me what you think. Please.

Fairplay and roleplay are bound together. Roleplay without fairplay is just powerplay, and that's wrong.

I think overwhelming force is generally preferred... within reason. Taking enough to beat your enemy and then some is okay... just don't take the piss.

This IS a roleplay server first... so I vote roleplay.

There's RP and there's driving people off the server. If there's a fighter furball and a heavy cap shows up, I will politely ask that he whistles and drives on by, unless his side is really losing that badly. It doesn't add anything to the fight, it just gives one side a really fat target and the other side time to regen their shields. Nobody really feels good about it afterward, the cap wishes he'd kept moving so he hadn't died, the people who killed him are miffed their foes got their shields back, and the people who got their shields back don't feel as accomplished when they win. If the cap manages to swing the fight, then it still feels bad; the losers feel that a good fight was ruined, and the winners feel they only won because of the cap, or perhaps worse yet that the cap stole their kills.

I'm using a heavy cap here as a clear example we're all familiar with. It doesn't have to be a cap, a fighter squadron that descends upon a duel is just as:dry:

As a general address; lighten up, and remember that there is, in fact, a human on the other side of the screen. Try not to gank people unless they're begging for it. And flying a fighter does not count as "begging for it" despite any protest ScornStar may put forth.

EDIT: @Blunt, yes, it's a roleplay server, and its silly to say "oops, we're doing too well, I'm going to conveniently engage this here cloaking device" but there's a line between casually ignoring a fight in the interests of fun and silly gimmicks to avoid (or not avoid) hosing people. You usually don't need that extra cruiser that's grouped with you, if you get into a fighter duel you can just tell them you've got it covered. Arrogance, the RP fairness stick.

EDIT2: @thierry, good trick, "insult" the foe for needing so much force and they might take the hint and accept your challenge to a duel. It worked in the Middle Ages!

it's possible people just don't think that what for them is roleplay is fairplay as well although it's definitely not.
I don't think Disco has ever been as realistic in roleplay as it could be, boy I have ALOT of stuff to comment about on how the Bounty Hunters in RP shouldn't even afford anything bigger than like a cruiser cause none of the houses pay them for big jobs anymore etc.

Fairplay, hands down.

This server is supposed to fun for everyone, it's a game. When an indy pirate decides he wants to RP some pirating and three caps roll in, who is having fun when he gets utterly annihilated?

That said, sometimes superior forces are in RP. There can't be a fair fight everytime, but when there is a chance for it, please, play along.

Fairplay. Any jerk out there who goes, "K, we r fyte bawmer so we n33d 7 more fytr cuz we get pwnt BY THE FREAKIN' FALCATA WITH A FULL COMPLIMENT OF ARCHANGELS..."

Hmm... I seem to have gotten carried away. Sorry, I've just seen too many Falcatas with nothing but Codes and a SN. Aaanyways!

Yes. Fairplay. Any jerk who completely destroys your good time to enhance his RP experience is selfish. A duel is perfectly in-RP (if you look at it as... Two... Lone wolf patrols? Scout patrols? Something... But its better that way... Even odds I mean) and both sides enjoy themselves. A cap isn't needed. Another two fighters aren't needed. Either you die, or your win. Its simple, but don't ruin other peoples' fun whichever path you go down.

BAF has a fair tradition of fairplay (the BAF| faction, not indies), for example, if i ever used my destroyer (rarely), i'd halt fire once all large targets were destroyed, leaving VHF to fight eachother fairly, (BAF>KNF battles involve lots of VHF, but usualy a cap or two).

But, on the other hand... we sometimes take it too far, we had 4 VHF take on a SCRA fighter, two of us held back, because we didnt want to clusterf*ck, but the fighter just shield ran for 30minutes and she brought in 5 or so more people as backup, we won though.
