Did I say that out loud?
Toby Neptune: Dude, if you would like actually have a ship that looked like a board... dude, from front on, like no one would be able to hit that thing dude, i mean like it would be TOTALLY slim man... haha awesome... anyway Dude... like... whatever, i like, am stoked with like the ship i have now, its like totally....
i just come up things on the fly, i find things are more interesting this way. Also i tend to look at the personality and think of a background before i start to create or rp the character. I find that way i have a much more substantial base for my characters, also with some factions, i research what there rp is like ingame and on the forums to make sure i make less mistakes.

I kinda have a "background" approach to it... I create a charater, and I build their history based on the universe arround them.
Example:
my trader Takara Hakase, which is an alias for Seta Konoe. A former captain in the KNF, he and his family were targets for assassination from their own government. One the eve of the War between Bretonia and Kusari, assassins were sent to kill the family. In the escape, he looses his wife (a bretonian) and is separated from his daughter. Now he's a Luxury liner caption, and transports goods and people with his crew. He rarely passes through Kusari and is bitter towards Kusari and Bretonian Forces. he tends to remanice and is a fatherly figure to those under his command.
the same went for my LN charater, after I watched some interactions between the LN and the rest of the Universe I came up with Kentaurus Toliman, a young naive pilot who truely belives in Justice. (think coming of age story) I want to develop him to "grow up" a bit, and depending, I may have him become a bitter fleet commander (or pilot), or a happy go lucky one... that... or a young rookie that sacraficed himself to save his Nation.
I want to develop a sort of "sky pirate" Charasmatic, Polite, Doesn't target the week, but he is definatly only for himself. Think Baltazar from FFXII, the only problem I see... is that I don't think i can pull it off... I can't role play theivery, and with the way things are, I don't think I could use any amount of silver toung to get out of a simple tradelane violation.
Well... let's see. I decided that I wanted to be a pirate. I first thought up a name (mine means nightmare), then I went about thinking how would a person, not born into it slip into the pirate world...
Then I wanted a slight twist. Polite pirate. Not naasty... but still effective. So a smooth talking skallywag... it's different and it's pretty close to how I am. The rest I kinda do as I go along, because it makes it more fun. But that's how I came up with Mordrom.
It's been an interesting thread. I'm personally of the opinion that character creation happens three ways, two internal one external.
1) Characters are inspired by the writer's personality
2) Characters are created to be the opposite of the writer's personality (escapism)
3) Characters are inspired by idols/other external influences
That might be oversimplifying it a little, but my opinion has not changed.
As far as my jab at multiple personality disorder, I'm of the opinion that as a writer gets better, they'll lean more towards it as a result of getting into so many different heads. I don't know if it's an inevitability if you write too much, but it's a thought that entertains me.
edit: Oh, and as for me personally, I make the most use of 1.
