I like how you explained this, Ash. Sometimes it may seem contradictory to how you play the game to follow someone else's lead, but you don't always have to win everything. Let others have their RP, and the next, they may play well with you as well.

Now this is a matter that's been troubling me for some time and i feel it needs to be noted by the entire community. And the matter is roleplay. Over the numerous conflicts and disagreements among those of us who feel unjustified we have overlooked a simple but troublesome matter that may be the main reason why these disagreements occurred in the first place.

People have their own opinions on roleplay and have the right to their opinions. But each of us; even though we may be playing the game for our self satisfaction and entertainment; need to realise that we are part of a community. That is an untoldand unseen rule of discovery, because as soon as you created that first character and flew your starflier off of Manhatten, you had a responsibility. Those of us may have realised it during their time as part of the community, but sadly to say there are those of us who are yet to understand. And so for those people i state here, that we have a responsibility to be understanding and unselfish towards our fellow players; and to do things that somtimes we may not like so that others can have a decent roleplay experience. You may not understand their roleplay, or agree with it, but if you just chill out for two seconds instead of trying to find a way to word a sanction report, you can probably find a way to just go with it. And leave the sanction threads for more serious concerns.

Let me put it into perspective.

Two children are playing cowboys and indians.

Child #1: BANG! You're dead!
Child #2: What? No i'm not, that's not fair!
Child #1: I shot you, you're dead, fall over.
Child #2: Umm....well i jump out of the way! Haha!
Child #1: No! You can't do that! I shot you, so you're dead.
Child #2: PEW! I shot you with my arrow, you're dead!
Child #1: What? No i'm not, that's not fair!

You get the picture.

As these two definatley have completley different pictures of what the RP should be like; And what should be the outcome of the scene. This also applies to discovery, you get two guys who are gonna have two completley ideas for PvP or a RP conversation, and there's a big possibility it's going to end up on the forums.

So what i'm trying to imply is, that somtimes it's easier for one of them to just accept their fate and go along with the RP. And if everyone takes this into account we can have alot more fluant and successful RP scenes, and less conflicts over petty differences.

So let's put it into perspective again.

Child #2: Ahhhhh! *Falls over arms flailing*
Child #1: *Blows finger*
Child #2: *Still dead*
Child #1: *Walks over to child #2 and helps him up* That was fun
Child #2: Yeah, maybe i can win next time?
Child #1: Let's do it again then.

You get the picture.

And as immature as it may sound, this also applies to discovery.

If you come online expecting to have the time of you're life with your new RP idea in mind then think again. You're not always going to win. And so it's easier somtimes to accept defeat or let your opponent get away with somthing than to start a fire and make somthing out of nothing.

Roleplay. It's a two way street, and no-one has priority.

i like your idea. But the fact of the matter is, nobody likes to play the loser. With that said, the second scenerio won't happen as much as you would like. Mayby if we just stuck with the established rp lines that are already in the game. wouldn't that be much easier? What about the ID's? why don't we just convert them back to the tractor beams and use the IFF's as our ID? because we all have seen the Police tagged trader, or the military tagged freelancer. or whatever you want to use for the tagging scenerio. Why would it be wrong to RP by your IFF and not by your ID?

Err... Well, what I meant to say was; slash-signed! If you join a role-playing server then you should have some wit about you as to role-play. I fail to see the necessity of telling people how to role-play, it's redundant. I understand setting down the basics, back story, and setting people into their roles. But the trend seems to to be more on the technical aspects on how to rather than actual role-playing.

Why can't people just play the game and enjoy themselves? Move along if you don't want to follow server standards.*

unfourtantly we all have seen pilots who come on and want to do what they want. Thier attitude. . . Screw what you want to do, i'm in it just for me. And considering that the game is rather hard pressed if not unable to enforce RP rules. and the game is free. . . well you get the idea.

This, again, goes back to the point that I've tried to get across multiple times. Discovery is a game, and like all good things, it will eventually end at some point in the future. Everyone here is here to have a good time, and on the point of RP, there is no point in restricting someone based on what they can or cannot do.

Turn the other cheek, smile, and nod. If they really bother you, fly away. Go somewhere else.

While it lasts, let's all just have a good time being here.

This, however, does not preclude the fact that there are some in the community who do not have the same amount of respect for it as everyone else. Those individuals do need to be curbed and reprimanded.

Unfourtantly what you consider fun, another considers frustating. True it is a game, but if you don't want to follow the rules. . . Get the F%#k out. pure and simple.

would you like somone to kill you in a Battleship as soon as you undock? would you like that, wouldn't you think that's interfering with your gameplay? would you want to play anylonger. I wish we all could "turn the other cheek" but it's a Ton of a lot harder than it seems.

RP is such a subjective thing. Two people can see rp so differently.

Here I must first apologise to VIPER. And here's the situation.

1. Shipper undocks from Manhattan and dead ahead is Viper attacking ships. So Shipper watches, VIPER must be aware shipper is there, they are close.

2. Viper kills two ships and Shipper realises that he is killing without reason.

3. Shipper scans VIPER and finds police and other good aligned pilots in his hold. Some 20 of them.

4. Viper, in front of Shipper from between 1k to 4k away continues to kill liberty police, then he destroys a neutral trader, again for no reason.

5. At 4k out Shipper opens fire, Viper is not hit. As Viper closes on Shipper he opens up. Viper dies but this was at the hands of another PC, a liberty police that had also engaged Viper.

Now in hindsight, using Discovery rules only I should have engaged in coversation (how this can be called rp I have no idea).

Now in real life, no policeman or citizen, merc or army office with weapons is going to think twice about asking a homicidal maniac to stop killing kids. He is just going to shoot! Nothing more or less.

I've been trying to apologise to Viper for not adhering to Discovery rules but have not seen him on. I'm also prepared to pay damages. But seriously, this can not be seen as rp, needing to talk first. I agree it must be done, but please call it a Discovery rule, not rp. Roleplaying should mirror what would really happen, in real life had that been a real life situation. Had it been a real life situation I would have been shot for not openning up on Viper sooner. Would love all of your opinions and believe me I'm open to changing mine!

In response to what Shipper's said, the fact that the gentleman's rule for declaring combat has become a hard in fast rule...well, its forcing things, if you assume you have to talk to the person you're engaging, but one could suggest that rather than talking to the target, you could call for help, and then jump in, talk to someone else, etc. You don't have to be talking to them, you just have to say something to the effect that they're about to fight you.

Even then, I would suspect, if it were possible to regulate such things as warning shots, those would be acceptable. Shots to make them aware that you are engaging...The whole rule seems silly, from an RP standpoint, but its not an RP rule. Its a "be decent to other players" rule.

In which case, a simple "drop those men and disengage, pilot" would suffice. If the agressor is interested in RP, he will likely respond, if he is not and remains silent, then by all means shoot him...you have fulfilled the "Rp before engaging" criteria.

However, just shooting someone because they have a hostile IFF is lame. The number of times I've had "RP" which consists of "Xeno! Die!"...

Death is not the only way in which one can win/lose a conflict...destroying a ship should only occur if someone fails to comply with a course of action you wish for them to take (cf: pirates and taxation, lawfuls and smugglers).

As a "lawful" (subjective-OCs are lawful in Alpha), begin by attempting to get the threat to remove itself...after all, gunfire can always accidentaly injure innocent bystanders. The best warriors are those that can defeat the enemy without firing a single shot.
