Old Pelagius, so drubbed by Saint Augustine, declared that all men will be saved eventually, without the operation of divine grace. The average American in our century has come to believe that all men may be saved through educationism, without need for thought. Mere enrollment in a college, the American Pelagians had become convinced, would assure a lucrative salary upon graduation, acceptance at the country club, tolerable manners, anticipation in middle-brow culture, exemption from military service, and moral equanimity. Ever since the end of the Second World War, therefore, American campuses had been flooded by ineducable young persons uninterested in abstractions, and consequently incapable of profiting from years in college, because the higher learning necessarily has to do with abstractions.
