Sanction and evidence

Not sure where to post this so put it here.

I've been playing on the server since last August and so far have managed to avoid doing anything too dumb and getting a sanction. However I have seen a number of fellow members being sanctioned after a player sanction report. In many cases they've all sworn blind that they didn't do anything wrong and it has created a lot of bad feelings.

How do Admins check the facts behind the sanction when we are speaking of something as subtle as a re-engagement after cruising? Surely we cannot trust the word of a defeated player? This would leave the sanction report process open to all sorts of abuse by players who simply took a dislike to another player.

In the interests of fairness it would seem appropriate to provide evidence to the accused when he is sanctioned so that they can see exactly what they did wrong and also see that the charge is genuine.

Your thoughts?

There has to be solid evidence of a rules violation, otherwise it's "he-said she-said" etc. I'm tired of people saying "show me the proof, I doubt you have any" because the admins don't sanction without solid evidence...

Screenshots or it never happened.

EDIT: The admins also have tool which look into the logs of the game, i.e so and so was here and so and so was there. They can also check the death logs, its usually easy to see re-engagements I believe. Chat logs are also checked, be they private, system or group.

unless it's uncontroversial the admins don't sanction.

I usually talk to the players afterwards nicely, and ask them to describe to me what exactly they did, and consequently, they admit to breaking the rules without knowing it, and I screenshot that in addition to the regular screenshots.

@elgatodiablo

So, in that case do you still report them? That's pretty shoddy practice if you do...

If they honestly didn't know, I'll let them off with a warning. If they actually have the guts to own up to it and apologize, reporting them is just...

Being a jerk.

If they keep their promises, no. But if they don't, then elgato has irefutable evidence.

Yes, in that case, I'd be reporting them as well if they do it again.

I don't report actual cases of rule-breaking, which is largely accidental. I let re-engagement, cruise, and language fly for the most part, since those were difficult for me to understand at some point. I'm very lenient and understanding when it comes to new players on the server who don't really know how things work. I very much prefer to talk it over with players who do not get the rules immediately.

However, in the case mentioned above, I report stupidity without remorse. People who blatantly go around OORPing, being annoying, or engaging in idiotic, nonsensical behavior(out of RP), get sanctions from me.

EDIT: If they can actually acknowledge their mistake, they fall under the first paragraph. If not, the second.

It was once said by a wise man that once the devious art of sanctioning is no longer used, true spiritual enlightenment shal follow.
