This is a rant, deal with it. I bring some logic into play however.

Tell me folks, what do you say when you go to fight, PvP, or just plain shoot at someone within the rules? Here is the rule in question:
Discovery Server Rules {} 6. ID and role-playing engagement rules Wrote:6.21 Attacking without an engagement notice is not allowed. All attacks must be preceded with some form of RP, regardless of NPC faction diplomacy.

Now, we are players, people, Freelancer roleplayers. We log on to roleplay, have a chat, trade and yes, combat each other in mouse and weapon group attack with whatever you have.

This is the center of the rant. The so called 'Engagement Notice'.

Tell me folks, what is your engagement notice? Hmm? Is it "Engaging?" "Attacking target?". If it is, I am annoyed with you. Your not a NPC, your not a silly AI responding to programming. Your a person (presumably). They think, and thinking generally invovles lines longer than 1-3 words.

Some people take effort in roleplaying prior to an attack, yes, I like that. But there is always some guy who takes this gap in keyboard response to attack someone while they type. This is VERY unsporting, disgraceful and shameful and if a Faction player does this, I ask for inquiries and lessons to the said person. This is not a PvP server, its RP. We want to exercise out creativity, not our 'l33t' combat prowess. Accomplishing both, will earn you respect here in my books. I hear Copperhead is a good 'un.

Now, personally before I engage I type more than one word although admittedly, I've had to do so because I knew I was going to be attacked with no RP justification and outclassed.
Examples
"Outcast unit, you are in restricted space, you will go back to your base now, or you will be forcibly removed from the area" - Sentinel.101
"Ahahaha! A Corsair!! Time for some limb ripping to feed him with! They're cannibals after all right? They need some food!" - APM-Scorpio
"Xeno unit, fall back to the base you popped out from, sensors detect the duct tape falling off, leave before it take it off" - Sentinel.201.A

To me those are decent, but long and drawn out examples of an 'engagement' notice.

Look to expand the RP, or even get into a RP banter or chat with the enemy! I've done it at times, and its great fun, and all sorts of things happen, but usually endfs with one leaving in either flames or own power.

To summarize, expand those Engagement Notices to help along the RP of the server, everyone wants to RP, its why we are here. If your here to PvP, camp Connecticut.

I had to say it folks, I know there will be counter-arguments. Bring em.

If I'm flying my bounty hunter out in the omicrons, I rarely even get that notice. Silly indy corsairs trying to get the early jump on me is all.

overheard in the Omegas...

"Enganging"

"Enaging"

"Enaging BH scum"

Now that's just plain lazy but I haven't reported these imbeciles for this yet.

Even if someone is all guns blazing, simply using /setmsg imaginatively allows you to add a little touch of class to your , um, war-cries.

e.g. "This plasma was brought to you courtesy of Rep-Ex. Alert the undertaker."

I'm tempted to start reporting the buggers, but I think admins get too much as it is... And not just the Corsairs...

Guh, people can't even spell their announcements no more... Not aimed at you Athenian...

I never use that /setmsg or that color text commands, I'd rather stick to slow yet proven methods

Nice Rep-Ex announcement. But still, I bet your S/D folks get a lot of these clowns.

Thing is that a lot of the players guilty for this only obey the bare minimum of rules, rules which they've learned the hard way by simply coming here and wrecking things without bothering to learn that we're a different server with different aims and goals than the others.

Often they simply don't care about roleplay, they just want to get their pew pew on.

They rate very high on the Rudo PvP-Hoar Scale.

Quote:I use a scale of 1 to 4 in regards to RP / PvP orientation.
(1) Player rarely enters combat. Ship, setup and weapons are all perfectly in line, often even under level. Dialogue is carefully constructed, often detailing the character's avoidance/cowardice in regards to combat.
(2) Player is a seasoned combatant for his/her faction. Weapons and ship are very viable for his chosen faction, but carefully balanced for combat viability. Dialogue is well-constructed, but combat is rarely avoided.
(3) Player is a veteran Freelancer competitor. Weapons and ship bear a vague resemblance to his chosen faction, choices made more in line toward pvp dominance than roleplay. Player will often use "allied" faction's equipment 'because it's better'. Dialogue is a mere prelude to sweet, sweet combat.
(4) Player has no idea what Discovery is about, or simply doesn't care as it's a 'big server'. Weapons and ship have no bearing in roleplay. Everything is stacked toward dominance. Player only obeys the rules as far as he needs to to not end up on the sanction forum.

Aye we do. One might suspect that they have something personal against <strike>us</strike> me.

At least /setmsg allows you to RP and defend yourself while avoiding shamefultypingdeath.

Don't get me started on spelling mistakes.....

Sometimes I'm lucky to get an engagement notice on my LR. I've had "Outcast, die!" while flying passively by a Navy officer.
Personally, I make up my engagement notices on the fly. I don't have any preset messages or preplanned things to say.

I'd like to think of myself as either 1 or 2 on that scale. I only use faction weapons, and a couple of pulse weapons. Edison.Trent uses a Corsair shield breaker though, so maybe number two for me.
