Hmm sometimes i have no time to come up with witty romanticized phrase for engaged or engaging. When someone is attacking you without warning all i can say is "Engaging" because fighting a gunboat in anything less then another gunboat you have to stop typing and start evading like hell.
so really if the person gives me a chance RP they i take it up but 90% theres no chance in Hell i'm going to be allowed RP when all the person wants is to kill me
I don't use the setmsg function, but this is how i announce things;
If i meet a hostile looking ship, i ask it to halt. And tell them to stand by for a scan. If they seem to be fully hostile, i ask what their intentions are. If i get no response, i will ask again and add a line about me engaging them if i don't get an answer. If i still don't get a response, i'll open fire.
If i know the person is hostile, i'll ask them to leave as soon as they are within selecting range (9.9k). So that gives him/her some time to respond. If i notice the ship standing still, i will stop shooting. If the player appears to be AFK i'll continue shooting, since that's not my problem.
If i come across a group of players that are from the same faction or "race" as me and are fighting hostiles, i will cruise to them up until 6k. Then i use thrusters and pretend i am scanning the ships. Once i'm within the 4k barrier, and see the ships are hostile, i will announce that i am locking on a target, or activating weapons. Then i thrust closer and engage.
In my opinion, you don't have to write whole essays about your plans, as long as you give the other people time to respond. Being at 300m and suddenly say "engaging" doesn't give the opponent enough time to react.
I usually argue with them, or order them out of the system, then give a few chances. Failing that, "Let's wipe the floor with this little bugger.", "Very well, let's do this thing." etc.
"Engaging" is pretty boring at that. I always find it fun to argue with my enemies first. It does help though that all my characters are (ok, maybe they just THINK they are) right. Single line comments just seem less fun.
1) Close the range while you are role playing.
2) Make a "role play" statement or question they KNOW you will respond to.
3) Then supernova you as soon as you begin typing the answer.
Ironically, role play is used to help pvp in this way and then role play is "invoked" if they begin to lose too--usually with comments about the ship or weapons you have:
1) "Big man has to have a missile."
A: have one and usually none).
2) "Big man has to have a gunship"
A: I usually fight alone and as a merc actually fly missions for cash--a gunboat is essential. Its slow going trying to collect a bounty alone in a smaller ship especially when you usually are hunting criminals who travel in packs.
3) "Oh you picked the pvp ship"
A: I fly a BH gunship as I like the look and didn't want a full gunboat. Gosh I guess it would be better rp if I flew the Dragon gunboat half the bad guys I engage are in--funny how all the Liberty independents are from Kusari.
Now who have I heard these comments from? Only two categories of players:
1) The pvp fighter/bomber jock who is immature and immediately starts to whine if he dies.
2) The "tried and true" faction member of a respected faction--when he or she starts to die.
The thought seems to be, "When I kill you (with a supernova, antimatter mine, inferno combo and superior numbers) its role play. When you kill me, its pvp."
I'm about ready to flip the tables in the role play temple because half the people complaining are the worst offenders.
No reflection on you Fletch, you seem a decent player and haven't had any issues ever regarding you but I am really tired of having the "role play card" pulled on me every time I fight.
You guys in factions who always have three or four other fighter/bombers with you? If I could fly three ships at once they all would be bombers too. Do the math, three supernovas versus a gunship--duh. And you know what? You NEVER hear me complain about your loadout in game or whine or gripe on your ship choice. It's the WHINING and GRIPING I am complaining about.
Sorry Fletch. For every, "Ooooh where has the role play goooone?" post I'd say half need only look in their own mirror for the answer.

I have setmsg rigged so that, if I'm in a hurry since I type slowly, I can just say, "I have a warrant for your termination, punk".
I prefer to have a nice bit of RP with my intended victim, though, first. I've had many occassions where we end up chatting and threatening back and forth and end up ... forgetting to fight. :)
Oh!! And just so everyone knows! That's is usually the main reason youll allways see that i died on the chat thingy. (I like flyin round enemy territoy):P
