I've played Homeworld 2...loved it! I got one of the mods...errr...ah, it was the Complex Mod. It added so much more to the game. Plus it made uber-cap ships to completely obliterate your enemies. Good times, good times.
I used to play that one - a lot. That was actually the first game I ever played online against other people. It was entirely cool to at least TRY to do that.
Note to everyone - playing multi-player on dial-up SUCKS!

Before Disco, there was HW. Infact, I used to be a fiction writer and personality on the HW2-PDS mod forums before it died. Good times, until the meatbag that ran it went ape and ran it into the ground.
And even before then, I've been playing HW1 and Cata since they came out. Vanilla HW2 sucks on it's own, but it's a good modding platform.
But, after PDS went down the tubes, I went to Disco and Garry's Mod.
Also, I think this thread should be moved to General Gaming.
But, really, my favorite was Hegemonia: Legions of Iron, and Haegemonia: The Solon Heritage.
Best space strategy games for me. Those were the 2 games that made my obsession for outer space deepen, which started when I played X-Tension by Egosoft.:P
played every single one of them until the bitter end. Truely awesome games. The only problem is that you would spend most of the time in the sensor manager (rather than watching the awesome graphics in case of hw2):(
