There is, a gulf between what is considered fairplay on this server, and what should be correct roleplay for a military/police faction.
I actually work in the control room of a police force over here, and I can tell you they always err on the side of caution. Several units will turn up to any remotely serious ongoing incident. Now the lone scumball with the knife might think that 'unfair', but thats just the way it is. Police will never put their officers under unnecessary risk.
The same is true of militaries; they will use the forces under their command to meet their objectives quickly and with an absolute minimum of friendly casualties. This can often mean using overwhelming force against an enemy who is either technologically or numerically inferior, or perhaps even both.
Now, I cannot support those who chase down a lone Xeno fighter with several Dreadnoughts, as this would be a hideous mis-allocation of resources. However, the same Xeno fighter could well expect to be chased and engaged by several navy fighters, as this would be entirely within the roleplay of a military faction. In fact, it would be the expected behaviour due to the requirements I outlined in the above paragraph.
Now, lone unlawfuls cannot really expect to go blazing into a system containing several navy or police players and expect a fair fight. They might get one if said players are feeling generous, but there are no guarantees.
I should expect that in most cases, such lone career criminals would do their utmost to avoid the authorities.
In the case of organised pirate groups and guilds, there is nothing stopping them organising (rl permitting) to attack a system in some numbers, to counter the police or military's inherent numerical superiority
I guess my main point is pirates should realise just what kind of role they are playing, battling against the odds stacked against you was part & parcel of a pirates life on the high seas a few hundred years ago, I see no reason why it should be different in freelancer.
Fairplay is a relative term here in Disco. Too many people are stretching the rules to fit their situation. People keep forgetting this rule ...
Quote:3.5 Attempts to pose as admins, threatening players with sanctions, attempts to interpret rules are not allowed. Applying to admin's name without prior consent of the admin is not allowed.
... this rule exists for a reason. There are too many people applying ONLY the part of the rule that lets them get away with what they want to do.
If a rule says you have to depart a system after fleeing combat ... leave the system.
If a rule says you must have a role play reason for getting into a fight ... then you need to have a role play reason to get into a fight.
If a rule says your ID, IFF, ship and equipment gotta agree ... then they gotta agree. Admins have provided an exception to this rule ... but you gotta have your setup approved and posted in the "special character" section of the forums.
If a rule says you have to be fulfilling a bounty on a pirate or other baddie ... then there better be a bounty on that guys head. Some bounties have been declared acceptable for the general bad guy population such as bounties on all pirates in a certain system ... but these too have restrictions on who can collect ... make sure you follow the restrictions.
I know, and have seen, all kinds of 'bad' playing from dock-hiding... (Today), and even just people who "phase out" and leave (Not the laggers!) I think that as an RP server people can have a level of cowardice, but lets play in the rules guys... I do however know many people who RP and play amazingly, and I think that as long as you hang with these kinds of dudes, then a few bad players wont make that much of a difference
//PS. I'd like to point out that this topic has 4 pages in 5 hours.....
"The pen is mightier than the sword." -Edward Bulwer-Lytton. "Whoever said the pen is mightier than the sword never encountered automatic weapons." -General Douglas MacArthur
Using roleplay as an excuse to ignore fairplay is terrible. This is still a game, no matter how thick a guise of realism we put up. Within RP, there is nothing wrong with a fully loaded gunship hunting down a light fighter, but fairplay dictates that bad form.
There's another person on the other side of the server you are shooting that is playing this game for the same reason you are. To have fun. It's not so fun when he logs on to be immediately outnumbered, outgunned, and suddenly is forced to not use his character for 4 hours.
hmmm well i cant speak for you, but i have never really had any problems in kusari with KNF...i mean i was flying a rogue gunboat through there, trying to find a station, and the most i got was "hmm odd a rogue GB here...in kusari?" or "i hope your just passing through gaijin" so with that said, i have rarely had problems with kusari lawfuls....more problems from the AFA then KNF or KSP
on that note, i do tend to have alot of problems in liberty, but then again i tend to stir up alot of trouble for the liberty lawfuls, like grouping 4-5 fighters/bombers 4 dessies, 6 gb's and others, who tag team NPC cap ships, and lay waste to pretty much anything NPC that can turn a profit....
but i stilll....usually, not always.....get some RP like..."errant i dont want problems today, dont make me call out the reserves"
anyway i am sure there are 2 sides to this story...so i would kind of like to hear what teh KNF players had to say as to why they ripped you to shreds?
As a low....LOW ranking officer I do as I am told, I went to this fight, saw you we're outnumbered and watched, cuz me a nice guy. I watched you SMOKE one officer. Then in a little while you KILLED another, and soon you we're hurting another BADLY! yet I still sat sidelines until two of them ordered me into the fight. I obliged as about everyone in KNF and KSP are ranked above me.
So....PEW PEW PEW, you're still kicking arse....PEW PEW PEW, we are barely denting you and poof, out of the blue comes two more KNF or KSP fighters, and your buddy...PEW PEW PEW, we do nothing. We might as well be firing paint balls at ya as well as we were doing.
So, sorry that it got to be WAY to outnumbered, but really, your skill was KICKING ____ out there. So don't cry too much now, cuz if we see you again, we already know (or at least I do) that 6 fighters will not do, no, we need a frackin battleship and three cruisers to take you down! And yer buddy, he ended up killing himself in that lovely planet dive fasion while all of us were failing to shoot him on his 9k+ voyage to do so.
I was in a lil cute Wyrm, and I am suprised you didn't smoke me as well.
As most of the time I fire up ol Ari, I get GANKED quick by everyone who is against the KNF, seems as soon as I put the KNF sticker on me ship it became a sirius wide target. Felt nice to be on the offensive side fer once.
' Wrote:FAIR!!!!!.....................War are not fair, never be,and will never be fair, one side are always more powerfull than the others.
If a robber put a gun on your head and ask for your money, will you tell him its not fair, please use a knife, give me a chance:P.
C'mon.........Life are hard for everyone, only the more powerfull survives.......................especially here.
The game is Discovery, not Darwinian Selction. Fairness is a part of every game played everywhere. You're not allowed bring a knife to a soccer game.
I personally would have no problem with uneven odds that were justified in RP. It's simply that when one's experience of the game is just uneven odds and no rp that I get a little "vexed".
To summarise: If you are a rugby fan, avoid chucking hand grenades into a scrum. Everyone suffers.
