I have only recently starting to play on this server, and I must admit, it has been great fun so far! I now have 2 characters, with which I play quite frequently.
Some of you might already have seen me passing by as ZTeeVeR (in a fighter), or jan.handelman (in a Camara trader).
So, I have now come to the point where both characters are above level 30, meaning I need/want to participate into RP, and I also dropped both Civ Id's for a Freelancer and a Trader id.
Reason I am not joining a faction (yet) is that I cannot really commit on being online quite frequently, or for long amounts of time. (Daughter, now 9 weeks, I think you can see why:)). So for the moment I much rather be on my own instead of making commitments I cannot keep, which is not fair..
Now, I got a few questions on my Freelancer ID Char.
The plan is to try and roam around Sirius without too much hassle. RP-ing is absolutely fine, and I might even consider building up a nice history for my character, but I am not such a "die-hard" player as some of you are (kudos for that btw).
As my trader is now making quite some money, I am planning on spending some of that to buy me a nice fighter (VHF that is), so I took my dragon, exchanged for a hawk, and went off exploring a few systems. Via Rheinland, I ended up in Omega 3/7(? I guess) on a base from the IMG. I found a nice fighter (Viper MKII), which I plan on buying. Here are my questions
- I can "just" buy this ship and continue my flying about? From what I can read, the IMG is pretty independent and neutral to the 4 houses, so that would not pose any problem I guess. Ofcourse, people could wonder what an IMG ship is doing there, but I think that the Freelancer id should explain quite a bit. (or is that a dangerous assumption?)
- Next to this, I understood that the weapons load out is also quite important on how you are being seen by others. In order to stay into character, I kind of need to stick with a more "general" load out. This means mostly civilian weapons, perhaps some liberty weapons? What would you suggest?
Also, as this ship is carrying level 10 guns, I am interested in what weapons I would need to have. (Not really interested in shield/hull busters by the way).
Any tips/ideas or suggestions?
Also, on a side note, my plan is to create another character, and try to experiment a bit with this one. Do you know whether a missile based setup (so as much missile launchers as possible) is viable? I know, ammo based does have its limitations, no long and deep journeys and docking quite a lot..
IMHO the Viper is a rather good and neutral choice, I don't expect anybody shooting at you just because you fly one.
The weapon loadout is more important.
Staying mostly neutral you can go with civilian and for level10 codenames.
Liberty is not considered neutral (it is a house) and they have lawful + unlawful weapons which will not be tolerated by the opposition...
Thanks for this JohnLenin, glad i was in the right track.
any tips on what weapons to use exactly?
Thanks for the head up Swift, i will keep that in mind. Wihen 4.85 arrives, i plan on redoing my characters anyway, but as i think it will be at least another2 to 3 months, i should be ok for now.
Though a Freelancer could probably use it, but never against the allies of the IMG or IMG itself.
For weapons, go with something neutral. I find that it allows the most liberty for a freelancer.
Heavy Flashpoints + Debs are good, or if you have money, codenames will do fine.

Due to bounty hunter/zoner connection to freelancer IFF (i.e, to get the IFF you have to be pretty friendly with both, doing BH missions, and zoner stuff seems to be seen as quasi-generic anyway) I think you can probably use buckshots or reavers or furies instead of/in addition to flashpoints and debilitators.
Viper is a pretty decent freelancer ship choice too I think. The Borderworlds line and maybe the AP/Bounty Hunter line (is that okay? I always thought it would be but seems like BH are fairly protective of their gear at the moment) are decent alternatives that are both good to fly, and, imo, two of the best-looking ship lines in the game. Freelancers have a lot of freedom with their choices, but it's safer to shy away from house military and blatantly criminal ships (especially those tied to just one criminal faction). Same with weaponry.
Not really sure what you mean by 'not interested in shield/hull busters'. All guns are either one or the other. Basically, all guns are hull busters, except Debilitators and Del Cids, which are shieldbusters. It's pretty ubiquitous to have a couple of them on your fighter, but it's possible to go with just hullbusters too, going from stuff I've seen players do without any.
If you're primarily interested in the RP with a fighter, then I recommend sticking with 'civilian' weapons. (I know, I've always thought that civilian cannons was sort of an oxymoron, but that's just me.) Anyway, that way you really can't be accused by any house and/or faction of having weapons belonging to their enemy.
My freelancer has a mix of Zoner and Liberty weapons on his ship - Liberty ones are so unbiquitous that they're almost as good as generic, and Zoner guns - well, he tends to not go deep into the houses for very long any more.
(But that's also because he's heard rumors of some new passages being found to some new areas, and he wants to go exploring! C'mere, froggies... :))
