Since only one person responded to my request in the suggestions topic I decided to post here to get it more publically known. If I am breaking the rules or something I am sorry in advance.

I think that an FTL Drive would be very valuable in both RP situations and DM situations. For those of you who aren't into Battlestar Galactica FTL (Faster Than Light) Drives allow the Galactica and its fleet of civilian ships 'jump' to another position in space. It takes a significant amount of time (Usually 1 to 2 minutes) to spin up the FTL Drives in the series. This can dissuade players from just jumping out of trouble. By the time their FTL Drives have fully spun up they would be more than likely dead. To prevent players from jumping across the whole map you can limit jumping to only the system they are in. I think this would be a great addition to this already successful mod.

Well the idea is not so fantastic, and no one cares about it and get used to not being responded to in the suggestions thread if it sucks no one says anything about....

Tank, don't be mean. I know it's annoying when a new person comes out and thinks they can improve everything in the mod.
@Minimum, every 4th noob proposes this and the freelancer game engine prevents this from happening. You can't mod everything about freelancer. The game engine prevents us from completely making a new game. Wait until you know something, then propose it. Tank is right, if no one responds, it's because some1 has proposed this before. We have some brilliant minds here on discovery... BTW, Tank you said no one looked at it 11 minutes after it was made. Be nice.

I am a long-absent Supreme Commander, Executive Commander, Grand Admiral, Fleet Admiral, and Captain in the mighty Hellfire Legion. I have returned, and am on an urgent mission from Drake Thastus to return the Legion to its former glory, and to claim the galaxy for its own. Only then will I be able to rest.

It has been proposed before, yes. And the idea was rejected.
I always liked the idea of having warp engines, but in battleships only, to compensate the inability to use trade lanes.

With high load times, and consuming power from the weapons, and/or shields, the Warp engine will work. It will allow battleship to travel fast without having to use those bloody trade lanes, and will give battleships more realism.

Now, to avoid misuse, we can make them to lower shields while loading, and take power from the weapons energy so their run time is not unlimited.

In fact, I think that if done correctly, a warp engine can work. It can take a lvl10 turret slot. And when activated on the weps list, the engine will lower shields, load, and take the ship to 3000 m/s for a definite margin of time.

It wont give too much power to BS as they are not too maneuverable and his large mass will make impossible to maneuver and pursue another ship at warp unless it is a battleship at warp too. So warp will not be useful to pursue, but to go from A to B only.

That's a good idea, although, could it be disrupted??? And the engine trails would be as big as the ship.

WOW, Korrd that is a great idea but 3000m/s is waaayyy fast and imagine big BS asteroid field. But what I like about this is that one can still cruise and hey why not put it on fighters as a class 10 weapons mount and take all energy and bring shields down. But only go 1000m/s because tradelanes and pirates do not mix and being able to run would be nice...

I think Korrd's idea is a good one. Then the BS will have to calculate its direction and when it will power the jump off otherwise if it runs into something it will blow up. Giving the realism about having to calculate and having danger in jumping.

BTW I tried going 3,000 m long ago in the speed mod through an asteroid field and I hit something and blew up.

If fighters had this like in tank's idea then that would be cool too. Maybe make it only be mounted on a special scouting ship. It would have weak hull and weps but it would turn very good and be able to jump. then whoever is jumpin would have to make sure he didnt ram stuff. which would also add to realism:)

--The speed should be near of the TL speed.

--You will not be able to go FTL inside an AF. That would be insane. The idea is to be able to travel in-system without using those nasty tradelanes, not taking the BS through everywhere faster than anything.

--Fighters should not have this warp thing. They are fighters, not intergalactic mini-battleships. Something like a BS or a Frigate could have it as those big ships need to be able to jump.
Look at vanilla; When you travel to Toledo, there is no JG nor JH that leads there. You reach that system in the Osiris. That means that the ships has a jump engine of it's own.
Our FTL thingie will not take you to another system, but will make battleship in-system travel easier, and more realistic. In space, the ship with the biggest engine tends to be faster. Don't compare with the sea ships. In space, thing are different. The biggest engine might have slower acceleration than a small one, but final speed will be higher.

--And no, no disruptions. 1 minute load time is enough to cripple a BS if faced with proper firepower. And remember that shields would go down. 1 min with shields down and even a fighter could do a lot of damage.

@Korrd, I think that there should be a special "scout" ship that can have a jump thingy. 1 main difference tho, it would only go 500-600 m/s instead of 3,000 m/s
