Eh.. Personally I see no need for a new server.. Most of the time even at 198 I just click it 4-5 times and I'm in. I think a split universe would hurt some of the RP value a bit in my opinion.. I say wait for the 4.85 Hype to die down before we commit to anything so hastily..

Just my eleven cents.... :D

I like the First option, only because then I could have an Insane character that is always freaking out about things.

I prefer the second option, as others have stated it effectively doubles the number of server spaces while in real terms keeps it as effectively one server.

It will take longer, but I think its definitely a preferred option.

Out of curiosity, how many Gigahertz would it take to make the server run at say, 250, and how much money would it require?

A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

So does no one think my option is possible or what?

Please, for all you hold dear, do this.

That aside, option one followed by the potential for option two in the future seems good.

Getting anything over 4.5GHz out even the best processors on air cooling is all but impossible. To run 250 players, I'd say 5.5-6GHz would be needed without experiencing horrendous lag. That kind of frequency with the current E8400 is only achievable with a good motherboard with well built voltage regulators supplying the CPU, and nitrogen/phase-change cooling. Its not cost effective.

Also, to date, there is no better overclocking processor than the E8400 for the money you spend.

Core i7 would be quite good yes, but only because of the really really nifty enhancements that Intel have applied to the previous Core architecture in it while at the same time, introducing and streamlining everything in it. Again, not cost effective...

What about a smaller, cheaper server to be used for planned events, faction fights and so on?

just throwing that out there.

I'm all for donating the cash to get another server up and running. I'll even buy some of the Hardware required to get it up and running. I have a few spare Hard Drives I'd be willing to send in along with some RAM I have left over from an old failed project.

Indeed, the second idea looks like an MMO setup, no?:P

P.S. If watercooling is needed eventually, I'd fund that too. Just say the word majkp.

Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.

I've dontated in the past, and I'll donate again before too long. Again, if everyone gives $10 or $20 - that's quite enough funds to purchase whatever would be needed. You'd pay that much for a month of WOW - without as much fun and entertainment as you get here.

Certainly at this point in time, the main server is quite full - pretty much most of the time. While a lot of that is due to 48.53 being out - there are other servers running that mod as well. I have two characters on one of those servers - and it has the capacity to hold 127 players, with an average of 15 on at any one time. There's just not the RP experience available there - and I've only got a ping of 30 to that one, versus my usual 180 to Disco. I'd much rather play here.

As was mentioned earlier, a second server for events would be good. Even BEFORE 4.85 came out, weekends certainly were ... busy as all get out. Trying to log on during Friday evening, Saturday, and most of the day Sunday, was a crapshoot. Rest of the week - hey, it's all fine and dandy.

There's an error in the thinking on the empty space on having two servers. Traders wouldn't be able to exploit the empty spaces - they wouldn't exist. Say Bretonia was on Server A and the Omegas were on Server B. You jump from Dublin to Omega 49 - you switch servers. You head around down to Omega 3 and come back in to Cambridge - you switch servers. As far as Server A is concerned, the Omegas don't exist, and you can't get there on that server.
