Allow someone to /setrep Zoner, causing all of Sirius to be neutral to them, causing widespread abuse..
And hey, while we're at it, why not just give everyone guard status? After all, a guard is really meant to fly anywhere he/she wants, and not just guard their home systems, right?
And to top it all off, Nommie reps for all..
Sorry for the pessimistic attitude, but allowing people to set a rep with any faction they want can cause massive abuse and ooRP'ness...

On Frontierspace-Mod we used templates to setup a characters rep, did work very well,
it was very easy to piss off your friends and very hard to make hostiles/neutrals friendly
so usually everyone stayed in character as it was really easy to mess up your char completely
so that you had no more friends at all.
The Guard rep should only be available for those who worked for it, who played in character
and took care of their factions needs/duties.
On FS a character that had used the desired template started with about 70% friendly relation
with the desired faction, to get fully friendly (90 %) you had quite to invest some work as it
was hard to increase relationship as mentioned before.
So the idea with a "/setrep" command ain't bad, all it needs is a workover of the repsystem,
make very foes easy make new friends very hard.
And if someone really thought he must switch his role and re-use the setrep command he was
reborn in a Starflier at Manhatten, or wherever this type of character had his starting location
and with startingcash only of course.
Using templates will also prevent players from playing OORP - as it's not uncommon that you're
freindly, sometimes even close with factions you shouldn't.
Like my BH char, it's fully friendly with corsairs, just b/c I've blown so many other criminals, that's
not the sense behind RP but as it is it happens to everyone eveyday.
If I could I would enforce players to use "locked" rep-templates where you only could get friendlier with neutrals
or already freindly ones and get hostile with em as well of course, but where it was impossible to get
hostiles neutral or friendly.
Some of us want it, but we ALL know it WILL get abused for evil.

Against it. People need to put some work into their characters. It's open to so many kinds of abuse I'm not even going to start describing them. Nice as it would be, the possible cons outweigh the pros.
To start, they have copy right over that unless we can create the same scheme with a different adjustment than them, or if we just ask nicely for their plans.
Second, personally to me it kills the whole purpose for rep building, and we have had these discussions before on this very topic. Mostly ending up saying it will kill the purpose of missions, and actually putting in effort into your character(s). You can relate the effort part to trading, as in 4.84 everyone used the niobium<-> deuterium run to power trade. Now we have to work harder for our credits.

I won't kill the purpose of doing missions and repbuilding, all that is needed was to make at least the interesting tradegoods repbased, for ref. you would need a rep of minimum 75% tobe able to buy niobium (or what ever) - that's how Mace did it in Frontierspace mod and it just was great.
You could concentrate on rping well and also building up your character and you had to take care what
you were doing and whom you shot.
If I could write this in german I certainly could explain the whole subject a lot better, but so I've to count
on your ability in imagination;)
