I like this idea *thumbs up*
the scanners don't differentiate for the distance they can be seen on, every scanner will detect a player at 14k. Though if they aren't on scanner and you get a message, lag perhaps?

I would also like local to be receivable if the sender is docked on a planet or station, others within 14k of the docking point could hear it

I don't really see downsides for this idea, as the system chat is still easily accessible, and the local chat, the one that should mostly be used more frequently, would be the default one.

If Canon won't have too much trouble with this, if it's not too hard to code, I support this fully.

This idea has been brought up before, and it has my full support.

Would be cool to have a bar chat as well. That only people docked on that base could see it.

Want it. Want Local to be my default. Would really, really like it to be in the options for chat settings in the comms box, as well as one of the up arrow channels with group, system, and console.

It's sensible, but... I would miss listening in on, say, LPI attempts to talk down a would-be revolutionary in New York. System chat, horrible for certain tasks as it is, makes any RP you do more public by default. Based on that alone, I'll be the first and maybe only one against it.

I'm inclined to agree with Knuthetal. Flying around as an unlawful generally avoiding death, it can get awfully lonely flying around in space without anything going on. Making system chat the default keeps me entertained, as well as providing me with a glimpse in the happenings of the system.

I'd have to agree with Rashnok and Knuthetal. It's nice to be able to listen to things going on. Also, having local chat as a default may make it seem odd to new players, since they would probably think that everyone in the system could hear the chat, and may make it slightly confusing for them.

I don't know about default, but definitely an option along with Group and System chats. It would help a lot.
