Quote:* Second idea will definitely need much more flhook programming, time and also testing before it can go live. It counts with 2 servers (later maybe more) but only one Sirius universe, each of the servers 'serving' only 1/2 of the systems. During a jump player is (if needed) automatically re-logged to the other server. Jumping, messaging, transferring cash between the servers and other stuff is handled via an flhook link. But some things will most probably be impossible to implement (like groups - they will have to be re-joined after a jump to another server's system). More issues will definitely be known later. This way looks perfect, but don't expect it to come sooner than in the end of this year most probably even next year. It's also possible that we run into problems that we're not able to solve at all.
Today at work, I came with an idea. What happens if when you are going to jump to another system, in the other sever, and the other server is full???? :$
Cannon, from what I've seen you be able to do with FLHook since you came to this server to help us out with programming...I'm damn sure you can get it to work.
Kudos to you man. If you need anyhelp with anything, you know where to find me.

You fear oblivion. Yet you forget. The universe remembers every atom of your being. Even dust hums your name in the dark. Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.
' Wrote:By the way, Casero, that is a nice question, What would happen?
Well, if you really did a bang up job with the programming and made it very complicated you could alternate what servers were hosting what systems based on server load. Every time someone jumped into an empty system that system would automatically shift to the server with the lesser load. Of course the systems with the most population (and population that doesnt often go to zero) would have to be permanently assigned to one server or the other, probably based off of a statistical analysis of average system population so the load would be split evenly. I would also say that systems that are right next to each other and popular should be on the same server so if a whole group decides to jump from one to the other the system doesnt blow up.
Justa question, has anyone considered asking Disco USA to be a part of some kind of Discovery Server Network?
Either a duplicate Disco - (which it is now), or as a second 'part' of Sirius.
Also, in terms of how to split the module. Perhaps instead of a bi-section of Sirius, you could have a inner/outer split.
That is to say, the four main house systems form a 'zoomed in' map - and the border/edge/gallia systems form a 'zoomed out' map - with a small hole in the middle representing the four core houses.
Space is big - really big - and there is nothing to say the such distances cant be covered.
The other alternative is to have entirely different sectors of space - linked via the Dom'Kovash Hypergates as mentioned in the original storyline...
The server could be reverse engineered. They did it for Earth & Beyond without even the binary code (much less the source), only encrypted packet captures.
Once deconstructed, a new one could be built.
If people with the necessary skills to do such can't be found within the community, it may be possible to raise money to try and hire someone. Heck create a sourceforge project for it, and see if there are any coder geeks out there who may have forgotten about Freelancer or would just love the challenge.;)
Brought to you by Sivran The Newb
I've suffered RSI in my right hand and am now even more useless in PVP. I now fly with a trackball!
\CS\Helkos - Teh cyborg Newb, formerly Sivran the Clueless Freelancer, gets pwned in PVP.
SmallTimeTrader - Teh Trader Newb, under new management!
Oracle|Randy - Randall Lamar, Teh Pacifist, Oracle-follower Newb (at least I don't have to worry about PVP on this char!
Texan_Twang - Texan Bounty Hunter, flies a Bomber, rarely played. Almost wish I could move him to another account and sell him.
They almost have to be hosted together in the same network or else you'd have too much cross-server lag for transferring player data and such effectively.
Quote:But there are not only technical issues. We are strongly critisized by some other servers and communities that by increasing the player slots we are destroying other servers. I must admit there is something true about this. People ususally want to interact with other players and they prefer servers with more players. But on the other hand we're a hard-core RP oriented community and we do all we can to discourage PvP only oriented players and while most of the other servers are PvP oriented we shouldn't really harm them. This issue needs to be discussed as well along the technical issues, we shouldn't forget about it.
I concur with this. But I have always thought about it like having the 2nd server is inevitable at some point.
