The aliens weren't very good at making 'scary' sounds for their ships and weapons. They need to take lessons from the German's who made the Stuka make that high pitched wail when it dived (Stuka = dive bomber) and scared the crap out of the US troops. Unfortunately, it also gave the troops about 10 seconds warning to the presence of the bombers..
