- put one image on top of another
- create a layer mask for the one on top
- add a gradient to the mask
- voila!

PS is more like a puzzle than it is a sandbox for those with supposed artistic abilities.

Yeah well, Photoshop is around $700, but most people aren't using more than $100 worth of it:P

I find making backgrounds from simple gradients, clouds rendered in Photoshop with a few filters on, space backgrounds, or anything else that looks aesthetically pleasing with the rest of the image all work as decent sig backgrounds. It depends on what you're making, really.
