Layer mask work perfectly in fading it...but say I wanted to make the white a green so the remaining visibility has a greenish tint?

How about making 2 images fade into one another?

- put one image on top of another
- create a layer mask for the one on top
- add a gradient to the mask
- voila!

I find making backgrounds from simple gradients, clouds rendered in Photoshop with a few filters on, space backgrounds, or anything else that looks aesthetically pleasing with the rest of the image all work as decent sig backgrounds. It depends on what you're making, really.
