I have two recommendations: 1 for pirates, 1 for traders.
Pirates: Don't demand all cargo. It's a dick move.
Traders: Don't shoot until you've RP'd a bit. It pisses pirates off.
A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.
My trader has honestly not been pirated by a "pirate" in a long LONG time. In fact, the last two hostile encounters my trader has was with a Wilde gunboat and a Phantom HF. Both were instances where I hit the cruise engines, opened up the chat window, and started RPing.
Now, given that they were not normal pirates, my response was a bit different from what it would be for normal pirates. My tradeship mounts a discovery scanner for a reason, and if I see hostiles on the scope while I'm in a lane, I drop out and try to go around. If I don't do it in time and they catch me at a downed lane, well, my response depends. First of all, how far away is the hostile? If it's more than 2k, I'm probably going to try running first, since there's a good chance I can pull it off. If it's less than 2k, I'll cut my engines and be all nice and cooperative. The goal is to get through the encounter without being exploded, and without losing my cargo. Because of this, I'll pay whatever the pirate demands, even if it's "unreasonable". Because really, losing a 150mil ship, a full load of cargo, and possibly lives, is not worth 2 mil, 5 mil, or even 10mil credits.
After the encounter's over, then I run away as fast as possible and scream on the system chat about a pirate, or contact the local police and military.

In RP terms? No. In OoRP terms, yes.
We are here to play a game. The trader is here to have fun as much as the pirate is. If the trader comes out of an encounter thinking "That was a fun encounter", you're doing it right. If a trader comes out of an encounter with a sour taste, you're doing it wrong.
Requiring someone to type a line of RP in under 30 seconds is wrong, and reeks of an excuse to simply blow things up. RP is not an excuse to blow things up. Blowing things up should be a possible result of RP.
I have slightly less RP to how I pirate, Saronsen is just Greedy. But my normal attempt with a non-willing trader rolls out like this.
-Trader appears on scanners, I shoot lane-
/l Now how about you cut those engines for me, hrm?
-Fires TCD as theyre trying to book it-
/l I said hold it.. Don't you think your life is worth more than the measly sum of credits I'm asking for?
-Transport either A: Tries to run; or B: Sits still-
A: /l That's it, since you won't cooperate, I'm taking your ship! -keel trader-
B: /l Now thats more like it.. How about X credits for your own personal safety?
-The Transport either then A: Tries to run; or B: Starts shooting without a warning; or C: F1's-
If any happen I usually kill them.
I also like to charge 50% more of they start insulting me or telling me to hurry up. You're in no position to order me when a Barghest is pointing a SNAC, a Nova, and a TCD your way.
Now if you want to strike up a conversation, or perhaps bring out some sappy story, or some other good RP, I'll probably strike what I was going to ask for in half.
My trader will always attempt to run if he has a chance, but if you CD me, i'll gladly have a talk with you, if i run straight into you, i will also RP it out, but if you're in a bomber or fighter, and act silly, expect to find yourself in an escape pod soon.
As for my pirate, it's sad that most traders try to run immedately, however, i did run into a few traders that willingly stopped and had a talk with me, but you have to realize, after a 10 or so minute RP chat with a trader, a pirates will to RP starts to drain, if you try to run away on thrusters while i CD'd you 5 times already, dont go moaning about why you lost your hold of 600 boron. And if you're empty, i'm not making an exception, you show up, you pay, thats how it goes.
That doesn't mean i wont lower prices, if you want to RP it out with me, i might even let you go for free, i even warn traders of other pirates up the lane, if you stop when asked, i will be nice to you, if you try to run i'll make a cash demand, wait about 10 seconds, if i hear no response or you start firing at the gunboat pirating with me in your big bad camara, i will blow you up, but more or less, i play a nice guy.

I don't see why an empty trader has to pay JUST because he has an empty hold, that to me sounds...erm 'mean'. But I guess your a pirate and money is money.

They are worth $1,000,000 USD if you find someone willing to do such a trade.
Why So SIRIUS?...(Give credit to my brother for this one XD)
Lo and behold! Our dear Tenacity will return in 20days!
Well my case when i am trading/smuggling whatever is next:
I am wiling to RP and there is no problem to pay any tax BUT if you start to shooting at me then there is well let`s say about 110% chance that i will stop to RP start shooting back and try to run...
I know there is different kind of people but this is only mine story.
I think the only time a pirate should have fun when blowing up someone is if he is a powertrader that just try to flee without saying a line of text. Except for that, just RP, dont ask too much and play nice.
Hmmm, why canadians are the only to have a sig image.
